Saints aim for record indoor crowd noise

Six nights after the Saints heard 137.6 decibels of noise at an open-air stadium they were visiting, they could hear nearly as much at home.

The Saints have announced that the Superdome faithful will be making a run on Sunday night at the record for the loudest roar at an indoor sports stadium. The Saints host the Panthers on NBC’s Sunday Night Football.

“We, as an organization, take tremendous pride in the great home field advantage that our fans provide for us each and every home game,” Saints owner Tom Benson said. “This is a unique opportunity to enter the Guinness Book of Records and we’re confident that our fans will help us achieve the goal. It’s a testament to their passion that we’re hosting a representative from Guinness Book of Records and it speaks to the anticipation that they have for how loud our crowd will be. We were part of history last week in Seattle and we are confident that our fans can make history, too.”

The record, set last month in Sacramento for a Kings game (really?), is a mere 126 decibels.

It’s the latest in a stream of noise records pursued by sports teams. Which is great news for the folks who maintain the Guinness Book of World Records, which many (including me) forgot existed.

Manufactured noise.

Record shouldn't count unless compared to similar construction.

Hate Seattle fans.

Drunk Saints fans should be able to get louder than stoned seachicken fans.

Hey it's all good...WhoDats inspired to break a record for an indoor stadium?
Key to the noise is beatin' on the seats and amplifying your voice! Hope we get the record and put a beat down on the Panthers!

Scoot was on the radio today telling people to get loud when the offense is on the field. Lol

We should get 10 decibels credit for creating the 12-year old man. We brought him to pubescent greatness in 2010.

Don't think it will happen in the Dome. Many of the seats are cushioned, absorbing a great deal of sound. In Seattle, they sit on plastic and hand out plastic cups to shout through.

We may get the dome record but we'll never match the hollow cackling of the hen coup.

You really need to stop flat-out lying. I know you hate the Seahawks, but come on, dude. Plastic cups to shout through? No. Plus, Seahawks fans do not bang on seats. They're too busy standing and shouting at the field. Go re-watch your game and look at the crowd shots they show on camera.

hmmmm well lets keep this civil. this is an attempt to cut things off at the pass before it "MAY" get out of hand.

as far as the seahawk hate i think things calmed down to the offenders in the stadium and a few posters. as a whole i believe respect has been shown and given to the team, fans and the city as a whole.

we all have a few bad eggs and well lets just keep it to a few

I realize this is the trend, but to me this reeks of a minor-league baseball publicity stunt
The dome is loud. It was loud enough to lead to TO's and a delay of game with SanFran.
It is loud enough to inspire our team and distract the other. Do we really need to qualify that with some cheesy record?

I am never in favor of following suit and this is no trump.

Some stadiums/domes have an acoustical advantage over others; usually designed with that aspect in mind, same as outdoor theaters.

It doesn't mean those are the loudest fans, it means that is the loudest facility. It also depends on where the decibel level is measured from.

Stadiums have an advantage to domes which is why Tiger Stadium can get to 125-130 and the dome gets around 112-117. Sound waves bounce and it reacts much the same way as turbulent wind or water flow.

irritate the opposing offense and if the QB has to call a time out or gets a delay of game the 12th man is doing its job.

We know we're loud dnt need a record to prove that

Who cares about the noise record? Saints fans and the NFL know the dome is loud, we don't need some stupid noise record to prove to others that the dome is loud

Re: Saints aim for record indoor crowd noise

Not that I really care much, but I am kinda surprised that the outdoor record is louder than the indoor record.

Its a power ranking, but with decibels.

Re: Saints aim for record indoor crowd noise

I have to admit that as loud as our crowd can get it leaves much on the table. Anywhere I have sat in the Dome, usually in the 100 sections, at least a third of the people sit on their hands when they should be up and yelling. I always turn and try to get everyone up and yelling, but there are always those that just sit there looking like everyone else is crazy. Maybe it is where we sit. I don't know, but maybe if they knew there was a record on the line they would get off theirs asses and make some noise.

The impressive point is that it can still get as loud as it does in the Dome even with the deadbeats.

As do I. The Motor City Madman certainly didn't do my ears any favors in my youth.
