White goes unnoticed – in a good way
I'll post my full defensive film study Wednesday morning. But I thought it was briefly worth pointing out that New Orleans Saints cornerback Corey White went almost completely unnoticed in the 31-13 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Which is a good thing.
White There was a lot of apprehension about White two weeks ago when the Atlanta Falcons picked on him during his first start of the season in place of injured veteran Jabari Greer. But White seems to have settled in nicely since then. According to Pro Football Focus, White was only targeted twice in 40 coverage snaps, without allowing a completion. On one of them, a deep ball intended for tight end Greg Olsen, White was actually looking for an offensive pass interference flag after Olsen had to prevent White from making an interception. On another, White crashed down to make an aggressive pass break-up against receiver Ted Ginn Jr. The Saints' entire pass coverage was great throughout the night (other than the one TD pass from Cam Newton to Steve Smith against Keenan Lewis in the fourth quarter). Lewis had a great night overall, aggressively jumping some routes and avoiding pick plays -- one time plowing through receiver Brandon LaFell's attempted block to stop Smith for a 3-yard loss. Safety Kenny Vaccaro and linebacker David Hawthorne also showed up on film a few times disrupting Smith's routes -- one time Hawthorne absolutely popped Smith on an attempted crossing route. The Panthers don't have a very dynamic passing offense. But it was still an impressive performance a week after the Saints had so many blown assignments in pass coverage at Seattle.
