Terron Armstead To Start at LT

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I am really curious. It will be interesting to see if the Saints come right out the gate with the chips and "max protect" type of look, giving Armstead help, putting a tight end on his hip, keeping people in ...

I am really curious. It will be interesting to see if the Saints come right out the gate with the chips and "max protect" type of look, giving Armstead help, putting a tight end on his hip, keeping people in to block, etc. I wonder if they will do that immediately from the start....or if Payton will try to run the "usual" offense of all guns blazing, without changing anything up.

I do remember the famous Miami game in '09, the line was a trainwreck early in the beginning. The first couple of quarters, Bushrod in particular was a mess at first, in that game at LT...it was pretty bad....THEN they adjusted and started doing the TE chips and double teams and using running backs to help out, take chunks out of people before releasing....the pocket got SO MUCH better for Drew and we started moving the ball pretty much at will.....first half and second half were like two different games.

Will be interesting to see what Payton wants to do here. Will the offense work, and if it doesn't -- can we really afford a big deep 17-point hole, if Payton decides to come out and just play the same O-line style we always do, THEN switch to more protection and chip blocking later on.

good points, but again I ask, why didn't we do that before, with Brown?

This is just my opinion on it -- but I think that with a few notable exceptions, Sean Payton is usually pretty stingy and conservative, about putting rookies out into live-fire game situations. I get the feeling, I don't think he likes it. Probably a LOT more cautious than the fans are, and more than many other coaches are.

A few obvious exceptions being guys like Reggie Bush or Colston who arrive and just go to work...but other than that, look at Ingram's rookie year....look at Pierre Thomas' early year or two, when he was battling it out with Aaron Stecker for the spot behind Deuce....look at Khiry now... look back at the game logs for rookie years of LOADS of Saints players and you'll see -- with a few exceptions - you will see a LOT of rookies being eased in to the league with, 1 game, 2 games, 3 games on their rookie game log, IF they get any games at all....P-Rob spent a lot of his first year playing special teams, which is where I first noticed he existed...Zach Strief was nowhere near the field for his first couple years....Jenkins only started as a rook because of injuries all over the secondary. Things like that.

Most of the Saints linemen who have played AT ALL as rookies, have been thrown into the fire with no other option but "next man up"....Nicks, Bushrod, filling in for veterans who couldn't go, to name just two.

I think it's just something Payton does. One reason why a lot of people love to label Saints' high draft picks as "busts" is because, a lot of times they don't come in and instantly produce, INSTANTLY on the field upon getting here.

Strief and Nicks at least got on the field on ST, but you are right, Bushrod wasn't even active as a rookie
same as Meachem, and the few disposable early round CB's
