Ahmad Brooks wins appeal on Drew Brees hit

Even though the NFL said the call on the field was the “absolutely correct call,” it’s at least a free one.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks won his appeal of his $15,750 fine for hitting Saints quarterback Drew Brees a month ago.

Brooks appealed his fine to league appeals officer Matt Birk, who overturned it on review.

Brooks was penalized for unnecessary roughness on the play, eliminating a sack-fumble. The 49ers were leading by a field goal at the time, but the Saints tied the game on the continued possession and went on to win on a last-second field goal.

That result would make a significant difference in the playoff picture, as the 49ers are a game behind the Seahawks for the NFC West title heading into the final week.

Good for him - I thought it was a good hit and good for football, even if it was Brees that got hit...

Jack Youngblood had it right, let's just put skirts on 'em...

Brooks had a choice. He chose to make maximum impact and damage.

When you do that you're open to being penalized.

2 months later the NFL allows reckless action to go unpunished. SMH

Meanwhile Dashon Goldson continues to head hunt with little to no punishment

All told this season, Goldson has been suspended for one game and fined three times for a total of $190,000 for illegal hits -- including another one this week.

So basically the NFL said it was a legal hit?

The million dollar question is: If Brooks had done that exact hit to Brady, Rodgers or P Manning would his fine be over-turned?

The NFL's "justice" system is much like ours in the real world. Blind. Failing. Rigged. BS.

Had he done it to Brady they would make a new rule like normal.

I dont have a massive issue with it personally. Players are being protected to the point some are happier putting pressure on QBs rather than hitting them these days.
Its a man's game and should be left that way.Nobody forces you to make hundreds of thousands or Millions of dollars to play.
It doesn't have to go back to the 60/70s of flattened players but good tough play when a OLB/DE is half a second late hitting a QB or a WR shouldn't be getting hit with big fines.

So sign a waiver, suit up and play some football.

Two Issues...

First, I don't wish injury on Brees, but when the game is played all-out, these players learn to protect themselves and each other as teammates; and they are expecting a big impact on any given Sunday; I'd argue that that situation prevents carelessness and will reduce injuries...

Second, there is an inequity that is becoming increasing glaring as the body of work from the Goodell-led era continues to increase and demonstrate certain favoritism which I've felt particular franchises have enjoyed for years...

I know its from a different sport but playing soccer as o did you go in for the ball hard and fair and generally both of you will be fine. The injuries occur when some tries pulling out the tackle or bottling it as we call it.You find more injuries when tackling at 50%.You learn to ride challenges in whatever sport you compete in.

Completely agree on the favoritism under Goodell.
I have been arguing for the oadt 18 months with a Pats fan, he really gets angry and frustrated at the accusations but I fail to see how people can miss it.

Good call. The penalty was enough. It was a good call on the field but the guy was just playing football and doing his job. The penalty was deserved but not the fine.

I believe that was Jack LAMBERT (although Youngblood is a much cooler name)

SMH - Scott you're absolutely correct! When I saw your post I recognized this misattributed quote...

I remember Archie Manning's response that he'd gladly worn a skirt to avoid the punishment he took and because Youngblood was in our NFC West Division, I still confuse the quote from him...

I only remembered because I grew up near Pittsburgh during the early SB years. Ironically Lambert and Manning were my two favorite players. I believe I was the only Saints fan in the state of PA for 10 years running.

Not exactly.

You can't tell me the NFL game of 30 years ago would come close to what we have today in terms of entertainment.

I'm fine with protecting the QB but allowing more downfield contact.

Don't forget, as the rules change the game adapts.

Im not saying let the QBs getting pancaked well after the throw but the sort of shot Brooks him with shouldn't be getting fined fined. It was a penalty in the rules but your talking inches in a perfect hit.You have one OLB/DE going full out to get to the QB the QB ducking and turning to get away and a blocker pushing/pulling the LB/DE and things are going to be mistimed or slightly off target.I didnt see a need for a fine.We would have been goung nuts if Cam or Junior had been flagged abd fined for similar.

Again.

The guy "swung" his arm at the neck area of Brees to inflict damage.

He could just have easily made a play at the ball...

How does anyone not see that?

It takes a bigger man to take a hit than to hit.

You know, I get tired of the pseudo-bravado of self-professed football tough guys. Especially on the defensive side. Yeah, put a skirt on the guy who stands in the pocket looking to pass the ball knowing 4-6 men are trying to take his head off, but the guy who runs full steam at him and takes the blind side shot, yeah, what a tough hombre. He my hero.

And it was Jack Lambert who said the skirt thing. Wonder what quote would've come out of Lambert's mouth if he had been the one standing in a pocket getting blind sided.
