A fill the time discussion....

Omg got into a heated discussion in the car on an surprise trip home to New Orleans to see family..... Ongoing!!! Lol were in Baton Rouge still talking... Dome Patrol defense vs our current saints defense.... Of course I have been painted in to the corner of defending the current D. I know it's not a close comparison yet because of the lb situation, but at least if the ball hits the air the TD is not Toi cook automatic..... Please waste a little time with me. Discuss

Dome Patrol versus our current defense?

or are we talking complete teams?

Comparing the Dome Patrol to the current Saints LBs is like comparing a crocodile to a chameleon.

Ricky Jackson was good against the run and pass

Pat Swilling was better at rushing the QB but teams could run at him

Vaughn Johnson was steady

Sam Mills was like Drew Brees in calling out coverages

The DP moniker was made over a few years, this D just finished its first season. They were monster LBs and we are now strong at DE/LB/S/CB.

Sort of apples to oranges and there isn't a direct comparison by players. You would have to directly compare stats, but the game has changed....

Unforunately no defense only in our disscusion here but hey whatever floats your boat... They (Dome Patrol) did have and offense as well, but the play calling from what I remember was a lot more conservative.

You could argue that we don't have one defender who is as good as any of those four were.
Jordan will be there, but not today

The Dome Patrol also had a pretty good D-line in front of them in a 3-4. We as of now really don't run a 3-4, so any comparison to them is not fair. Wait until we run a 3-4, it might buy you some more time.

I've said it before, we could one day see all of our D line starters go to the Pro-Bowl in the same year. Not to say they're in the same league as the D P's LB corp but it makes for a great starting point.

Too bad we're going into the Eagles game with a depleted secondary because with all of our starters we have a top 10 backfield. So far Corey White is holding up fairly well so far but we have zero depth.

My one contention, and defense for the current d is if the ball hits the air, at least it's not and automatic TD..... I know It's not much to cling to but it's all I have.... Keenan Lewis even at this stage of his career has played the best cornerback season we have seen, dome patrol or other wise. I am arguing that we have plenty of the parts of what makes an impressive d, lbs lacking of course...lol

I thought Trevin Wade played fairly well the past two games?

Keenan Lewis is only 27, still in his prime?

Who else is hoping Jimmy breaks the goal post? I know it would pump us up.

In the playoffs, I can foresee a 15 yard excessive celebration flag... Or if Roger has his way, take the TD away for taunting or something...

Re: A fill the time discussion....

Dome Patrol vs 2013 Defense? For discussion's sake how about we combine the front 7? Imagine that! Inside backers Mills, V. Johnson, Lofton, and Hawthorne. Outside backers Jackson, Swilling, Turnbull and Junior. Defensive Line of Jordan, Hicks, Bunkley, W. Martin, F. Warren, and J. Wilks.

The Dome Patrol had to compensate for years on the offensive scheme called by Carl Smith, too, which put the Patrol at the disadvantage more times than not and their special teams coverage sucked back then too. So the 2013 defense has the advantage from just that standpoint. Carl Smith could arguably still be the worst offensive coordinator of all time for any team ever. I'm nothing special, but at the age of 10 I was rocking about 75% of calling his plays before the huddle even broke. That man was awful at his job.

Speaking of special teams...can we finally confirm that crappy special teams coverage units are a staple of Saints football? From a historic perspective, it has been a must for this team since at least 1981.

Man I can't wait to see this D next year with a nice ball hawk safety, depth at CB, and a smashmouth LB, I'm getting all tingly at the thought of it!

Lol anything that draws a flag for excessive celebration and a 15 yard penalty (attached to the kickoff) from the refs is looked upon at silly, childish, selfish, and stupid by some of the members in here. I guess you already know win or lose I would love it.....
