Should be breaking news

Re: Saints QB Brees willing to adjust contract

Do not confuse "willing to adjust" with taking less money. Brees, as does virtually every player that restructures a contract, will still get every penny of the guaranteed terms of his contract. In addition, he will get additional guaranteed monies along with an extension. The key is that the additional years will allow the team to prorate that guaranteed money over a greater length of time thus lowering the cap hit, especially if it becomes more back-loaded.

This will give the Saints better flexibility to work out the necessary deal with Jimmy Graham.

It had no doubt that Brees would restructure. It is a great personal financial decision and benefits the team in the short term.

Yeah, knew that would happen. Drew isn't dumb.

Tired of getting hit, Drew? Need more time to throw?

He'd better or the flood gates will open up on him and he'll spend lots of time on his back this coming year and no D.

"willing to adjust" with taking less money how will that work? i Guess Benson is going to shell millions upfront and/or tear up the contract and do a new one

i am not sure how this all works under the new collective bargaining agreement, from the bits and piece i have read it is not as easy as it use to be. especially this early into a new contract

any insights out there?

I thought Drew's contract was front loaded.
Meaning majority of the money was due in the first 3 years, after that it was less??

Someone posted earlier that it would need to be a new deal completely. Now that he is two years older, my guess is that this one would be heavily front-loaded

It was explained to me that the reason the contract was backloaded was in anticipation of the salary cap increases expected from the latest TV contract and called out for in the players CBA. The increase in salary in years 4 and 5 will be (hopefully) offset by increases in the cap.

Don't expect that big increase with the league paying out $800ml or what amount it was

He said whatever helps the team. A 2 year 2M dollar extension helps the team.

No. The whole point of restructuring is to give short-term cap relief to the team and long-term security to the player. That's why these deals get done. Brees will get a two year extension with more guaranteed money. Some of that money will be paid via a signing bonus and prorated over the entire new term of the restructured contract, while other agreed upon base numbers would be shifted toward the back-end.

Drew Brees willing to take more money over longer period.

He's going to restructure but its better to do it after the 2014-15 season. This upcoming season he costs us $18/mill, next season $26 Mill. It will be better to do such after next season.

He did get the majority of the money, however that was in bonus and low salary the first two years. The remaining escalates in salary.

Remember his contract freed up cap space in 2012.

Re: Saints QB Brees willing to adjust contract

He has 3 years left, a new deal would look something like adding 10M to what he is already owed on his present contract but turning those 3 years into 6.

Thx Guido, Oak, and WhoDatFan26 for explaining that.

I used to have a lot of respect for Brees....

BUT NOW I EVEN HAVE MORE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still, taking all he was signed for, but later is a good move for all.

Did you forget what a whiny ass beatch he was during CBA negotiations and his contract season?

He's no better than any of the rest of them. I can promise you any restructure will result in more money for Drew.
