What to do with Curtis Lofton?

Curtis Lofton is a tackling machine, with that said he is a liability in coverage, do we trade him for a good draft pick or keep him?

Re: What to do with Curtis Lofton?

If we did trade him we wouldn't get a high draft pick so I see us keeping him.. I'm sure he won't look so weak in coverage once we get some help around him from yhe corners and lbs.

Re: What to do with Curtis Lofton?

If he can't cover, don't put him in situations where he has to. Play your players to their strengths, not to a scheme. Roman Harper and Lofton shouldn't even see the field on passing downs.

Re: What to do with Curtis Lofton?

Its his last season without a restructure. $9ml in 2015 for a ILB that cant cover, only $2ml dead money so restructure or go imo

As well as the defense played this year, I don't think they should mess with things too much. Although, I do think ILB is a position of concern in the future.

Well, you've got two QBs that run the read option playing for a conference championship this weekend. What does that tell you?

Has it really come to us questioning our best ILB?

lol It shouldnt
Lofton played really good this year. I do think we need more speed at LB but I dont think Lofton is a player the Saints need to get rid of just yet.

Rez, that's fine if we knew on each down what the opposing offense was going to do...

And I get what your saying about the obvious situations, but something has to be done for all three downs; just don't get that we no longer have three down players and they make 5x's what the players of the 80's made...

Re: What to do with Curtis Lofton?

I don't say replace him but you could draft his potential replacement to add depth to The ILB position. Maybe someone with more superb cover skills. As a veteran he can really teach a lot to a new LB, even if they drafted a OLB he could enlighten them on somethings.

What to do with him? Well maybe see if he will restructure and extend. Lofton is a tackling machine and played well this year. Why the hell would anyone want to get rid of him yet?

Re: What to do with Curtis Lofton?

We've been over and over this several times during the season. Lofton is a really good player. Getting rid of him would be foolish. And if he's such a liability in coverage how come we had the second-best pass defense in the league this year?

What do we do with him?
I am thinking we let him lead the team in tackles again, with an average of 2 more tackle than the second guy.

In order to save time let's list everybody who doesn't need to be replaced. I'll start
Kenny Vaccarro
Keenan Lewis
Khiry Pobinson
Terron Armstead
ummm uhhhh........

Man we SUCK!

Re: What to do with Curtis Lofton?

If anybody doubts Lofton or Hawthorne are good players, watch some Saints games from this year, then go back to 2011 and watch our linebackers then. The difference is night and day. If you want to get rid of Lofton for a "fast" guy like Casillas or Dunbar you are not paying attention.

People are overreacting because we didn't make it to the Super Bowl. So what. We were in the final 4 teams in our conference, one last-second loss away from a division title. You don't start throwing away good players from a roster that good.

WRONG!!!!!

If you don't win the Super Bowl you must blow up the team. Come on... Everybody knows that.

Re: What to do with Curtis Lofton?

Lofton is a toughest question for me going into a 3-4 D, yes he is good in a 4-3, unknown in a 3-4. Lofton is an animal on run plays, maybe he could be used like a Sam Mills type lb in the 3-4. If we run the 4-2-5 with a 3 safety set he gets picked on in coverage. Tough call when we still need speed on the ILB. position.

The dude played the most snaps on defense that played very well. Give it a break.

Here's the thing
we don't really play a 3-4, or a 4-3, and yes, we seem to have 3 safeties on the field a lot. We play whatever Ryan scheme has conjured up to get the 11 freshest/best players on the field, and that will almost always include Lofton.
Today's fun fact: Lofton was on the field for 96% of all defensive snaps. I think Ryan might know what he is doing

David Hawthorne and Curtis Lofton are like Batman and Robin. You can't mess that up

I don't think Lofton is as bad in coverage as you guys say he is. Jmo.

That they both have great Defenses and amazing running games...

Lofton lacks the speed we need but the guy is a beast against the run. I like Reddick but I would mind drafting a young ILB in the first few rounds.

don't put him in cover situations

Re: What to do with Curtis Lofton?

Lofton is a keeper for 2014. Reddick is a good young player with potential. If a guy like Borland falls to the 5th, they would be wise to grab him.
