Crazy Theory of Mine

We have some apparent deficiencies on the offensive side of the ball. The most blaring being Lack of a true #1 at wideout. Strong physical athletic guards being another. So here's my suggested prognosis and I do warn you , this idea is pretty radical.

Every year , there is a period of free agency , followed by the Pro Draft and if you haven't found what takes your ball club to the next level you are doomed to repeat it and blow cash , picks , and cap space in a very risky totally hit and kiss based system. But is this really the only talent pool we can draw from to upgrade ? I think not !

Jimmy Graham , Antonio Gates , Tony Gonzalez , Julius Peppers , catch my drift ? My proposal , our Jerry Rice may be in the D League shooting 3s right now. We've seen the instant success of basketball players that didn't quite fit in make a beautiful transition to an NFL stud practical overnight.

We need to invite 20-30 of the NBA's best D-league talent and give them a thorough tryout at wideout ... Heck a center would make a hell of a gaurd ehh ? Just saying ... Innovation

Blaring indeed.

There is a very and I mean VERY fine line between innovation and crazy talk.

More crazy talk..

Sign a 7 foot Center who can jump, and just toss the ball up in the endzone and let him sky for the rebound, err I mean the catch.

"It's only crazy if it doesn't work" and it's not an NFL slogan but a beer commercial.

Ironic much? :)

There is an ever so slight weight distribution difference between an NBA Center and an NFL guard.

BTW, Drew has enough throwing over our o-line now don't ya think. You want taller? Lol

WR is no where near our most glaring need.

Like Oak said, Drew already has enough trouble seeing over the line. If his head goes back any further trying to look down field it will roll right down his back.

Re: Crazy Theory of Mine

Yes, Gonzalez, Gates, and Graham played college basketball, but none of the three was anywhere a star. Gates was the best, but played against MAC talent.

They were/are NFL stars because they worked hard and learned the position. Not sure how being a skinny d-league BB player translates to running routes and timing patterns, and not sure that we are in crisis mode at WR, but ...

Re: Crazy Theory of Mine

I'm just saying a Derek rose or Russel Westbrook can't be a bad idea as a wideout... 6"3 + in football shape around 225 running well under a 4.4 , immense leaping ability , cat like quickness can change direction at the drop of a dime ... Yeah I must be insane for even drawing the comparisons and thinking that could ever work ...

And I like how you took the picture of the skinniest center ever and compared it to a thick lineman ... I was thinking more along the lines of big baby Davis and Randolph ... 280+ pound guys , guys that can block box out and move , which translates into pulling and more eifficient blocking ...

The eagles don't have the biggest o line but they led the league in rushing by using athleticism rather than being fat ... From what I can tell being athletic and solid is better than being big fer nuthin ...

As touched upon above, the great NFL stars that were basketball players were IMHO football players playing the wrong sport. Not great NBA players that came to football.

Playing BB and FB are not the same sports physically or mentally, and basketball shape is not football shape.

Bottom line is that there is absolutely nothing stopping basketball players from going to NFL tryouts. You can't just will them to go tryout and where is the motivation?

NFL is a lot more physical and greater chance of injury.

NFL pays a lot less on average.
2012 numbers
AVE NBA salary 5.15M
AVE MLB salary 3.2M
AVE NHL salary 2.4M
AVE NFL salary 1.9M

Why would any NBA player with a promising career in basketball come to the NFL?

Besides... BB players are puzzys.

But delivering beer and playing basketball and transitioning to football are two different things. It has only worked because the other guys were football players masquerading as basketball players.

Re: Crazy Theory of Mine

Well...

My son pretends to play basketball in the local church league (high school level). The first time I saw his team play, I jokingly told their pseudo-coach "hey coach, you got your left tackle playing center", and not only does the kid (and I use that term loosely) looks like a left tackle, I came to find out he's indeed a left tackle for his HS team. Kid has potential, I tell you.

And seriously, tell me it'd have been too much of a stretch to convert Shaq to o-line.

how is that two different things? so you're telling me a beer delivery guy has a better shot at football than an athlete playing one sport and then make a transition to another? you sound absurd sir!

What he was saying is that Michael Lewis was a return guy that delivered beer until he figured that out. He wasn't Doug Heffernan fresh off a UPS truck.

What sounds absurd is saying returning kicks is "playing football". Returning kicks is running with a loaf of bread.

All I have read here is that because a guy can dribble a 22oz +/- basketball is of a certain height/weight and possesses speed he is NFL worthy. Considering how many play vs how many want to play in the NFL, that is absurd... Borderline ludicrous. There is a whole lot of skill that goes into that equation.

How about this.... Charles Brown fits the spec sheet, how did that work out? Will Smith..... Scott Shanle..... Shall I go on?
