Interesting read on J. Graham Franchise Value...

When dissecting the NFL’s top Tight End’s, there’s Rob Gronkowski & Jimmy Graham—and then there’s everybody else. Gronk and Graham have redefined the TE position, so it’s no surprise that the 6-year/$54 million extension that Gronkowski signed before the 2012 season is being floated around as a baseline for Graham’s new deal.

However, Graham is rightfully looking to surpass Gronk’s deal. Here are some of the reasons why:

Timing of deals: Gronkowski signed his extension after his second year in the league; he still had two years remaining on his rookie deal at the time of the extension. If hindsight’s 20/20, it seems Gronk made a phenomenal financial decision, as he’s suffered multiple serious injuries in the past couple of years.
But Gronk’s decision to extend his contract when he did (with two years remaining on his rookie contract) meant that his leverage in negotiations was sapped. If Gronkowski were a free agent after his monstrous 2011 campaign (as Graham is now), he would have received a much bigger deal than he did.

Gronk took the money while he could because he knew injuries were catching up with him if he had a great season and ended it injured, he wouldnt get a huge payday

as for graham, he's a monster mismatch BUT he can't block, he cowers in the face of physical defenders and easily loses concentration and drops passes when defenders don't give him a free release

12 mil - he's a good player but he isn't worth that, mickey would be wise to let him walk rather than handicap the rest of the team

colston is our franchise leader in nearly every receiving stastical category and he is making 7 mil a year, I'd take another aging marques colston over a greedy jimmy graham anyday

Another reason it wouldn't be in the teams' best interest to sign him to a contract over more than 9-10 mil a year

Give Jimmy a break...

He can cash in this year. I don't blame him. Make the team Franchise you. I'd do the same thing...

Except that his greed may cost him much much more. What happens if he blows out his knee under the tag?

Oops, oh well, I doubt that 6 year 50 million contract will still on the table Jimmy boy.

These are the type of contracts that slowly deteriorate a dynasty. When push comes to shove good players want money, and they get paid.

There are protections in the CBA for a player that is tagged but gets hurt and cant play for x amount of games. It does have to go through arbitration but there are protections.
