Strief will become free agent
 

The New Orleans Saints and right tackle Zach Strief have continued to express a mutual desire to keep Strief in New Orleans, according to Strief’s agent Ralph Cindrich. However, Cindrich said the Saints are not in a position to make an offer at this time, so Strief will become a free agent on Tuesday.

That’s not a huge surprise, since the Saints are obviously looking to control costs as much as possible this offseason while being slammed tight against the salary cap. As I’ve written before, I think they’d like to have Strief back at the right price. But he could certainly wind up elsewhere if another team is willing to outbid them.

The same goes for their other two unrestricted free agent starters -- center Brian de la Puente and safety Malcolm Jenkins.

Pretty much confirmation that Loomis's magic hat is not so full of tricks this season.

We are about to get young, quick, through the draft.

Yikes. So we have RT, S, CB, RB and WR to replace? Only two more positions to pick in the draft now. :greendevil:

Scouting department are about to earn there pay checks, our team has enough leadership to still be a contender whilst getting younger at key positions

Sad to see some great players go but its needed if you want to succeed in the future, I've seen some fans(mostly on facebook) calling mickey loomis all the names under the sun for getting rid of lance moore, guy was great for us but this has been coming for 2 seasons now

What S, CB, RB and WR are we replacing?

S- Losing Jenkins is addition by subtraction. I think losing Harper is more of a loss but they like the replacement option in Bush who graded out extremely well according to PFF. -- Bush was our best safety last year according to PFF.

CB- Greer is a loss but he missed most of the season and we still had the #2 ranked passing D. Add PRob in the mix and a very talented Wade (he will surprise a lot of you) and we are in good shape.

RB- Have yet to lose anyone here. I bet we trade Thomas or Sproles. Sproles will be missed. Thomas is getting to much praise for what could be argued as his worst year as a saint. He put up some numbers but had his lowest YPC and YPR ever.

WR- Moore has been nothing but disappointing since signing his contract. Loomis chose to pay him 2.5m not to be on the team. I love Moore but he is a system guy and won't do much elsewhere. I hope Andy Tanner gets his shot now.

Aside from all of that, rumor has it that Jimmy G is getting 20m a year and will play all of the above positions to justify his bloated contract.

Streif looks to be getting his pay day i guess. shame he was or is a key member of this team

I think we might end up regretting this one. Maybe there is a guy on the roster that can replace Strief without a hitch. It happened when Strief replaced Stinchcomb, after all. Harris seems like a gamer and has some experience so I imagine he'll be first in line.

So, we just added $6.5 million to our spending budget 3 days before Strief officially becomes a FA. Any chance we are trying to make a deal before he hits the open market?

I know Strief is a team leader, but I thought there was a fair amount of pressure put on Brees off the right side this season. This might turn out to be a good thing... who knows. I think they would turn to Harris as next in line. Also look in the draft for potential depth at the tackle position.
