New Orleans Saints aren't rebuilding, they're renovating: Jeff Duncan

I always laugh when friends ask what I do during an NFL offseason, the implication being that the league goes dormant during the spring and summer, and everyone is vacationing in Tahiti until games kick off again in August.

Truth be told, NFL seasons actually begin in February and March. This is when the foundation is laid both physically and philosophically for the upcoming season. And if you've been around the league long enough and observe intently enough you can sometimes decipher the blueprint and envision the finished product.

pretty good article from Duncan.

Younger, faster, stronger, cheaper and more hungry-er!

I have zero issues with how we've handled things this off season. It's a good time to reload with younger talent rather then hold on too long and have to do a complete rebuild a few years down the road. Indy was fortunate a few years back because Luck was pro ready, but not everyone is that lucky.

It's going to be interesting to see what kind of players we draft. We can go in so many different directions.

It sounds plausible. I hope he is right.

Imagine having a team like San Fran or Seattle but with Drew Brees and Sean Payton at the helm?

This is what The 49ers did in the 80's. Always trade or release a player a year earlier than later.

That last part is could be a thing of beauty. You let the BPA natural talent in the draft guide you, mold around the talent instead of making the talent fit your mold.

It's much more efficient.

I'm sad that Lance and Darren are going/gone, but it does make me wonder with all the dismissals, combined with the salary cap increase, if we could go for a big name talent like Orakpo or Byrd. That said, we are probably better off letting Loomis pick second-tier free agents who are undervalued like we did with Greer and Keenan Lewis.

And then in the 90's they just decided it would be simpler to pay them under the table. Sorry, I like to grind that old axe once in a while :)

Most if not all of the veterans released by the Saints have played their last down in an NFL game. It does shock a little bit, but necessary to make these moves.

I think Greer and Vilma may be done, but I can see everyone else playing somewhere next year.

Harper, Moore, Smith and Sproles will certainly be playing.

I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest to see Greer back at minimum after testing the market. Cant see many teams looking at him and offering much salary with his injuries

You're contradicting yourself. We need to go younger, stronger and faster then we need to part ways with them to get younger, stronger... faster yet to be seen. They were apart of our success but "what have they done for me lately" - they become expendable.
