Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
The Panthers' front office hasn't spent all of its energies on Steve Smith this week.
A league source said the Panthers hosted free agent safety Roman Harper on a visit Wednesday. Harper, a two-time Pro Bowler cut by New Orleans in a salary cap move, left without a contract but is expected to remain in talks with the Panthers, the source said. Harper, 31, played in only nine games, with five starts, last season. He's the type of undervalued player Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman signed last year and said he was looking for again this offseason. Harper would give the Panthers an experienced safety to replace Mike Mitchell, who signed with Pittsburgh this week, and possibly Charles Godfrey, who is coming off Achilles surgery and is a potential salary-cap casualty himself. Harper, the Saints' second-round pick in 2006, was due to make more than $3 million in salary and bonuses this year for a Saints team that was tight against the cap. The Panthers like to use their safeties to blitz, something Harper does well. His 17 sacks since 2006 are the most by any defensive back during that span. He also has 14 forced fumbles. Harper missed seven games last season with a knee injury before returning in Week 10. He had five tackles in the Saints' playoff loss to Seattle. Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
Good for him. He was a much under-appreciated player when he was here.

Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
I liked him in the right system but it was the right time to move on. I do not have much hate for the Panthers so I wish him well in 14 games a year and will continue to hope he crushes Matt Ryan every chance he gets.

Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
Our passing game would be secure two weeks out of the year...

Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
I'm surprised the Rams haven't shown interest in Roman. Greg Williams loved Him when he was here. Harper had his best years Under Williams I figured that's where he'd end up

Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
Harper was a lot better in coverage this past year than he has been in the past. And overall I thought he played really well. This could be a decent move for them.

Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
Harper may have had his best seasons under GW, but GW didn't exactly become famous with Harper under him..... only infamous.
Our defenses struggled under GW. |
Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
harper is a throw back SS just like Teko Spikes is in NE at ILB. rule changes have made them a expendable. 20 years ago they are pro bowl players year in and year out but today they are lost. tell you the rule changes are killing this game

Hahaha!

Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
Could be a decent signing if they use him correctly and he can stay healthy... He needs to be used as a in the box safety almost like a small linebacker
|
Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
The Panthers offseason has been disastrous so far.
|
Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
Could have been awkward in the kittens locker room if Smith was still there.

Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
Remember how Drew destroyed Tracy Porter in preseason. Harper better get ready for two very long days.
|
Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
Good signing for them. I'll pull for him when he's not playing us. Disappointed in our so called fans' reactions, but I'm getting used to it.

Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
I look forward to him blitzing Melty Ice out of his pants twice a year

I guess I am more of a fan of the Saints than some players. Harper had a few good years when the league was less pass happy, but now he is just a liability. Although Harper would have been a better signing than Jenkins I think we can all honestly say our defense is better off without them. |

Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
Boy I always said I'm glad Roman Harper is on my team because he would kill Drew on a blitz...lol..Gonna miss him....So who replaces him in the Victory formation?

Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
Much appreciation to Harper, the guy was pure class all the way. He got blamed for a lot of stuff that wasn't his fault. And I thought he played really well last year when he was put in a role that played to his strengths.

Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
Deep balls galore against the Panthers next year.

Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
people seem to forget a QB ran him down from behind.

Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
I remember him making big plays throughout his career. Thanks for your time and good luck in Carolina.......mostly.

I'm not rooting for him in Carolina..I just appreciate the effort he brought..Because I've seen a lot of players come to New Orleans and stay on the we're losers so I'll just get paid and make sure I'm straight!!This guy helped changed the culture of Saints football! |
Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
I wish him well, but it was certainly time to part ways with him. I can't really comment on how well he'll fit the Panties' defense, but he'll certainly provide some veteran leadership and accountability to that lockerroom.

Sass is the new class, and it's more hip to have a different opinion than a correct one, as best as I can sort the generation out Danno. Original ignorance is celebrated. |
Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
Good in the box safety. Audible to the tight end when you see him on the field. LOL.

Re: Panthers bring Roman Harper in for a visit
Harper’s continued to be one of the Saints’ most consistent and dependable defensive performers, as one of the NFL’s most physical strong safeties. He’s the only safety in franchise history to have been selected to two Pro Bowls. Since being selected in the second round out of the University of Alabama by New Orleans in the 2006 NFL Draft, he’s started all 99 games he’s appeared in at strong safety, and totaled 701 tackles (496 solo), six interceptions, 17 sacks, 52 passes defensed, 13 forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. Harper finished second on the squad in 2012 with 124 stops (91 solo) while also adding nine passes defensed, two interceptions and a forced fumble.

Good luck Roman. Wish you the best; as long as it's not against us.
