Wow. That signing really got people's attention...

I was more surprised about Bush being # 12..... I mean I'm happy about that, but he didn't stand out to me until he got flagged for raping Harvin in the playoff game.

I honestly hope we run a 4-2-5 or 3-3-5 I just want all three of these safety's on the field with Byrd playing center field Vacarro doing everything needed and Bush coming in the box and bring the wood.

Re: Look' Here To See Where Our New Safety Ranks...

Rapheal Bush is really good. Idk about being #12 in the NFL, which is why I don't follow these rankings, but he's got the potential to be that. He's really fast for a safety. Plus he can lay the lumber. He's faster then Harper and Jenkins, hits harder then them, and covers better then Harper, and probably better then Jenkins.

I hope vacaro and byrd don't have a demolition derby and hurt each other going for the pick.

Its kind of hard to shine when you can't get any playing time ....

Our defense is going to be a turn over machine.......especially with the D-line applying the pressure. Now then just give me another good corner and we'll be dominant.:bng:

Eric Berry is the 2nd best safety in the league. Donte Whitner can't cover to save his life. I don't even know who Will Hill is. And I like McCourty, who we tried to trade Pierre Thomas for a few years back, but Idk about #2 in the league.

We tried to trade Thomas for McCourty? I didn't know that. I'm glad it didn't work out.

Yep. McCourty was a corner at the time. Still a rookie I think.

Thanks. Learn something new everyday.

Combining both strong and free safeties is like combining tackles and guards.

Well put... Although nowadays the position designations are becoming less and less relevant. Some teams just have left and right safeties with different coverage duties. It's becoming less common to have a single high free safety while the strong safety plays in the box all the time.

I haven't reviewed all 32 teams, but I think there are quite a few that still use strong and free safeties. I'd say there's probably a majority of teams that use SS/FS.

Most L/R safeties are in primarily cover-2 schemes.

That's true about Cover 2 schemes. I think it's broken down far more than that though. Vaccaro is essentially a strong safety but he's been used as a Cover 1 free safety and as a nickel back... That's just one player though but I think there are plenty of teams that situationally use both safeties in different ways.

I believe that Byrd will play a lot of high safety here......freeing up other players. That is how he was used last year. He is really going to give us a Darren Sharper type of impact in the secondary.
Sharper was the catalyst in '09 that brought us home a Superbowl.:bng:

Absolutely. Byrd is almost strictly a single high free safety. Vaccaro will move around though from a Cover 2 deep strong safety to an in-the-box strong safety ala Roman Harper. Mix in Bush when it comes to 3 safety looks and all bets are off when it comes to traditional safety designations.

Shhhh! About Bush til he is signed, everyone focus back on Graham. If we lose Bush I am going to be sick!

I'm positive Bush isn't going anywhere! Our coaches probably had huge smiles on their faces watching the Seahawks receivers crap their pants whenever Bush was about to hit them in that playoff game!

Nautically Byrd will be a better Safety next to Vaccarro than say Jonathan Meeks.
