Defensive Additions / Turnovers
Our defense is getting very interesting from a turn over perspective.
Marcus Ball - 2013 / 3 INTs (5th highest in the CFL), and 3 Fumble recoveries (2nd highest in the CFL) Derrius Brooks - 2013 / 3 INTs, 1 fumble Jairus Byrd - 2013 4 INTs, 1 fumble in 11 games. 2012 (Full Season) 4 forced fumbles and 5 INTs TOP 3 Interceptors for the Saints in 2013 Lewis - 4 Jenkins - 2 Vaccaro - 1 Top 3 Forced Fumble for the Saints in 2013 Jenkins - 2 Jordan - 2 Lewis - 1 I may be reading into it, but it looks like Sean wants 2009 turnover numbers. Now whether they see the field only on Special Teams or rotate in remains to be seen. |

The one glaring weakness was takeaways where we ranked 4th worst in the league. Also, Patrick Robinson had 7 picks in 2011 and 2012, which is 2 more than Keenan Lewis has in his entire career, and Corey White has 2 picks in somewhat limited playing time. 2014 motto - Thats Mine!!! |
Re: Defensive Additions / Turnovers
It was the one disappointing aspect of the defense last year.
The team seemed to start well enough in creating turnovers but that went downhill as the season went on. If they can stay around the same in regards to pass defense while improving on turn overs and take 10-15YPG off the rush defense next season that will be one hell of a unit. If only the special teams could improve as much. The defensive side was much improved last year but the blocking on returns was truly terrible. Thats why i dont blame Cadet and didnt blame Sproles. You can return if you are getting hit with a yard or two or catching the ball |
Re: Defensive Additions / Turnovers
The thing that I'm excited about is how fundamentally sound our D is, turnovers were the only thing that was missing and the recent additions show that we are rectifying that
GW proved turnovers can be created through effort, However.....GW's D was all about confusing or rushing an opposing QB and therefore wasn't even close to being as fundamentally sound as Rob Ryans D is If the biggest thing we lacked last year was turnovers, then we have a lot to be excited about on defense this year |
Re: Defensive Additions / Turnovers
I've been saying this for a few years, and I'm glad to see that the coaching staff is looking to improve this area. I'd rather see a big play than big hit any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
I think with Brees getting older we are going to need to give him the short field more often. Hence the move to more of a comitment in the running game and hopefully more potential turnovers from the defense. Next we need to improve the return game and this team is looking more and more interesting. |

Re: Defensive Additions / Turnovers
We were a top five defense(four I think). With these additions we are making our defense is going to be scary. We will be a turnover machine.

Re: Defensive Additions / Turnovers
As long as we don't focus on turnovers at the expense of making the stops, then I'm fine with it.
As it stands we have a pretty rare thing on defense, because we can stop even a good offense in its tracks and get lots of 3-and-outs. Turnovers are great, but at some point you're going to run into a team that won't give you any and you have to be able to stop them the old-fashioned way. |
