So their main argument is that last year Bailey fared less well than Corey White when one was covering #1 WR's and the other was covering #3 and 4 WR's until injuries forced him higher on the depth chart?!

Re: New Orleans Saints hay have made a mistake signing Champ Bailey

I think the article raises some valid concerns, re: Bailey's play last year. But it also depends on the supposition that we're paying him too much, based on a figure of 2 years/7 million. The problem with that is 7 million is the max, not the actual number. Unless he becomes the Champ Bailey of old and starts making Pro Bowls and All-Pro teams again his actual pay is likely to be much lower than 7 million.

Also, if worst case scenario Bailey is slightly less effective than Corey White was last year, I think that's a big win for us. White was extremely good down the stretch.

If he does play like the Champ of old, then we just won 100 mil on the penny slots8-)

i do not see Champ starting at all. he is a veteran that will do spot duty and will be a player coach IMO. This is not the first time the saints have done this. odds are champ will not collect the big bucks in the contract but he stands a good chance at getting that ring,

Will Osgood?

And his opinion rates higher than Sean and Loomie...because why, again?

Yeah. That's what I thought.

Champ fought foot injuries all last year, so going off last years stats is a mute argument

The guy's main argument is that we could have had Jabari Greer back for around the same amount of money...now I love Greer but he is not going to be playing any football this year, for anybody, because of his injury and his age, just you watch...that was a Captain Picard face palm moment when he said that, for sure....

That article is a soup sandwich of confusion..

Here is a "factoid" that is based on "likely", which can be "easily explained away", but "doesn't prove anything inherently". Is a 'factoid" that doesn't prove anything inherently a factoid?

Wanting is invaluable and unquestionable but willing isn't a good way to determine future success.

As far as the 2/7m.. Thats 3.5m/year and at this stage in Baileys career Loomis has likely made a good bit of that performance based and LTBE.

He wasn't jetted from Denver because he was bad, he was jetted because he isn't 10m/year good...

Sharper was 34 when he came to New Orleans with 12 years of NFL mileage on him. Champ Bailey is 35 with 14 years of NFL mileage on him.

My thoughts exactly... A very discombobulated articled on many levels.

Yep. And Jabari Greer never has been, nor will he ever be on the level of a Champ Bailey.

According to Coach, they all "have a foot", therefore your argument is valid.

It's a little premature to think we know right now.

Champ is going to be Drew's main target in 1v1s furring camp.

If he gets roasted in the offseason hell get released. If he doesn't we will see a good bit of him.

Essentially...

We got a crappy Champ Bailey for $500k... and cut him with minimal loss if he doesn't pan out.

or

We got a Pro-Bpwl caliber Champ Bailey for 1.8m/year

Where do year end incentive bonuses fall, in this year or next? I don't mean just for Bailey, but everyone?

Not sure if I completely understand the question but they should fall into that respective year.

The roster bonuses fall into their respective years.
The pro-bowl, play-time, and Annual will also fall into their respective years as those are not identified as year specific.

The grayish area is the NLTBE (Not Likely to be earned)
*2014 Roster Bonus (active 6 games): $250,000 (NLTBE) <-- This one for instance is NLTBE so it doesn't hit the cap unless he is active for a 6th game, then it hits that years cap.

Was I close?

Ill guess that Loomis was very careful to word things correctly (NLTBE) and ensure that our cap doesn't bear any weight until it has to.

That helps, and leads me to this what if: It is the end of regular season and we are 500,000 under the cap. Bailey earns 1.45 mill in bonuses. How do we pay it? Do we have to cut someone?
That's why I asked what year the hit falls in

Only the bonuses that are NLTBE are not counted towards the cap. The rest count towards the cap right now so we are covered.

Theoretically you could say if we have $1 in cap space that could put us over and cause us to be penalized but Loomis never gets that close.

When you see me hemming and hawing saying that 2m in cap space means no cap space this is a small part of the reason. The rest is that between right now and start of the season we will have a minimum of $4m in signings between practice squad, the drafted players, and +2.

+2 is because right now it's a 51 player soft cap, the lowest two team salaries are not counted yet. Rookie minimum * 2....
