I've always wondered why more coaches don't just use these games as a practice. Like you said, maybe one preseason game you never punt. It tests your 4th down conversion team and lets you see how the defense reacts if they have to cover a short field. Or in another game, punt a lot to work on coverage units, even on 3rd down if necessary. Or perhaps use an entire half to do nothing but run the ball to work on run blocking/power run game. You can probably combine this with the extra punting, or the going for it on every 4th down. |
