Living in the now proven to be sound strategy for New Orleans Saints
"I'll tell you what's good about Mickey, fellas. A lot of times we don't think about he's a CPA, an accountant," an upbeat Benson said at the NFL owners meetings in Orlando, Fla. "So when he first came into this thing, it wasn't all that important. But he knows the numbers.
"He knows how to add: Two and two is four. Some people don't know that." Living in the now proven to be sound strategy for New Orleans Saints | Larry Holder | NOLA.com |

Re: Living in the now proven to be sound strategy for New Orleans Saints
Knowing 2 + 2 = 4 isn't what makes Loomis elite
Knowing that 2 + 2 equals 4 this year, and 3 next year, is it's the old accounting joke: How much is 2 +2? How much do you want it to be? |
Re: Living in the now proven to be sound strategy for New Orleans Saints
To me, what makes Loomis great, along with his cap magic, is that he doesn't settle for just good players.
For example, we needed help in the secondary, Loomis went out and got the best safety on the market. Not the 4th or 5th best available, the best. Two years ago, we needed a middle linebacker, he got one of the best in the league, we needed a guard, got the best one not named Nicks, the year before that we needed a running back and he went out and got Sproles. We keep reading every year that the Saints are in cap h***, well if this is cap h***, keep it coming. It's fun to be a Saints fan. |
Re: Living in the now proven to be sound strategy for New Orleans Saints
Loomis is going to keep pushing the cap until Brees is gone. Then and only then will he consider purging the roster and rebuild the team.

Re: Living in the now proven to be sound strategy for New Orleans Saints
I don't think his mindset is to ever "rebuild"
He's going to make changes, trades and drafts that will always keep us competitive. |

I think we purge yearly. Just look at all the vets we released this year. That may be the norm now. |

$ = must equal value. Even if you're doing well at your position, if you're not performing at a level that justifies your salary, you get released (or traded in Sproles case). That maximizes the talent under the cap. Sproles and Moore are examples of performing well, but not well enough to justify the compensation based on market value. Bunkley's salary was recently adjusted to reflect his market value base on his performance. This is the reason I would like to see the Saints take an inside linebacker in the first or second round of the draft. Both Lofton and Hawthorne are being paid more than what their performance justifies. This season both need to prove they are worth the money they're making. If one or both still underperform, having a talented ILB waiting on the sidelines would give the Saints leverage in negotiating a new salary for both of them. |

So, the salary cap is like a debit card? You can't spend what you don't have. Unless you are smart like Mickey Loomis and borrow money from the future to pay for now. It's beautiful. Loomis uses it more as a credit card somehow.......I don't know how. I'm not an accountant.
