Really!!! With 2 picks saints classified as winners?

Best and most worrisome picks in 2014 NFL Draft

The New Orleans Saints got faster by adding Brandin Cooks (No. 20), an explosive receiver who can play the slot and hit the home run on the outside for coach Sean Payton. Stanley Jean-Baptiste (No. 58) is a large cornerback who could match up with the big pass-catchers in Atlanta and Tampa Bay.

Like I said-
John-the-Baptiste will eventually line up against Jimmy-the-bastid.

LOL

Yes we are winners. With the talent level already on the team we need just a few more pieces.

Re: Really!!! With 2 picks saints classified as winners?

The reason we are classified as winners is because 1.)we got the reveiver who some draft pundits considered to be the most NFL ready out of all the receivers(he runs the entire route tree) and 2.)we needed a CB and got one who represents the new breed of big CB who can also run and catch the football(former WR). We filled the holes we needed and still got much needed depth.

I would MUCH rather we get only two impact players than a dozen "just another guys" like some around here wish.

Re: Really!!! With 2 picks saints classified as winners?

We picked arguably the highest impact player in the draft behind Watkins. We got the new wave of CB, tall and long,
Then we picked a Butkis finalist who even at this moment claims to be 100% healthy who would have been drafted much higher without the injury concerns.
I didn't like the 2nd half of our draft that much, but we knocked it out in the 1st half

Of course we are winners, the draft made us better, period. It made every team better. Look outside of the box and see the positives of the draft instead of knocking all of the picks. Look, we picked at 27. That means our team was pretty damn good already. I trust our organization from top to bottom. I'm gonna have to ship you a FAITH bumper sticker dude. :D

You've got two possible starters from day one. That's not a bad haul from one draft. We also added depth with players that have a huge upside. And we are bringing in some quality UDFA's. Our players are high character smart players and will only make our locker room stronger.
That's sounds pretty solid to me. :bng:

Re: Really!!! With 2 picks saints classified as winners?

Again, this team was a handful of plays from the NFCCC and possibly Superbowl.

They added key pieces in FA, drafted a difference maker on offense and seem to have improved Special Teams which has been an achilles heel in recent years.

If you're looking for a big splash this wasn't the year it would happen.

Re: Really!!! With 2 picks saints classified as winners?

I didn't like the second half either but there wasn't much left but cadaver parts and huge projects, usually someone with one stellar skill but awful in almost everything else. We don't have issues either like almost every team in our division. Tampa went offense entirely. Good luck with that. It took us years to build ours. They have a good D but so do we and it just got better.

Re: Really!!! With 2 picks saints classified as winners?

After being a little down on the second half of the draft I actually like it. A lot. I am still questioning picking a Safety (positionally, not the guy himself) but outside of that I love what we have done. We are moving everything towards the way teams are winning right now. Defence. Oh and we have Drew Brees, those other defensive teams don't have a QB anywhere near as good.

My only concern would be the solitary O-Lineman we took in the draft. Sure we can address in UDFA, but look at the list of names that we have through UDFA so far. One single O-lineman and two bloody safeties amongst the names! Seriously? Can we please appease my concern and get a couple of extra big bodies :)

Re: Really!!! With 2 picks saints classified as winners?

We improved overall...with Sproles & Moore leaving, we bring in an improved/younger Moore and a younger Sproles-type player all-in-one with Cooks. SJB should help the secondary right away, too.

The 2 LB'er and 1 Safety pick on Day 3? They will make their money on Special Teams. and I think all 3 will be pretty good right away given their talent and be starters a few years down the road. However, with Coordinator Curly "Nyuck Nyuck" McMahon running the Special Teams units, we've pretty much already wasted these 3 young men's talents before they even get fitted for a practice jersey. Sad.

Re: Really!!! With 2 picks saints classified as winners?

I am trying to look out the box but knowing all the possibility we could've done is dissatisfying. I know the potential that these kids could bring us and I will remain a loyal fan and cheer for these players but it will be sickening to have another draft that only two remain on the team after 3 years (2011 draft class)

2011 Saints Draft Class Recap

Re: Really!!! With 2 picks saints classified as winners?

Just the fact that we finally give a Brees a guy who can be a true #1 type WR makes this draft a success. If the guy is as good as he looks on Youtube and if Stills is what we think he is this offense will be even better than the 2011 edition.

If Baptiste turns into a decent starting CB I'd rate this draft as a major win. Hated not having a 3rd though.

I am happy for people to get 1 or 2 players out of draft and think that is a success(mike Ditka). To build a franchise into dynasty you need to draft more than just 2 players.

So I understand you.

The Saints became insane and 4 picks have absolutely no upside or chance of becoming something great?

No I didn't say that. My concern is that they will be on IR til they rookie contract is over or worst they be cut. They do have potential but is the risk worth the reward from where they were selected in the draft?

Some of you must think its 1980 concerning these injuries. Knee injuries aren't what they used to be, especially for 21 year olds.

Vinnie won't even play this year, so I guess he will be on IR

How do you know he won't play, he's fully recovered from his ACL tear which was nearly 8 months ago now and said he feels better than ever

I think he'll do great on special teams

We will see, I don't have a crystal ball I don't know how they will pan out I pray that they all able to contribute and have successful career with or without the saints but I don't feel comfortable with these picks. Hopefully I a wrong and I eat crow (especially for Vinnie)

Agreed, If knee surgeries were as big of a deal as they used to be, colston and reggie bush would have retired about 5 seasons ago

How is this year any different from past?

Ivory......

Morgan.....

Butler.......

Vilma.... People still want to keep him

Hartley.... Same as Vilma

4th round and below are not starters, what difference does it make this season if they need time to heal but have more upside than healthier draft picks?

So what if 4th or below are cut? If they don't make it, next man up. We are allowed to have 53 and there will be over 80 at camp.

Other than 2012.... When has Sean screwed this team? I believe some are still suffering PTSD from the Pre Payton era.

Here is a riddle for you... Who was the last team that looked like champions on paper and ended up champions? Don't say Seattle they are full of 5,6 round picks. Someone is finding obscure talent, taking a risk, and making them better. Just like Payton does.

You know who wasn't laughing at Percy Harvin getting paid and only playing in a hand full of plays? Denver.

Re: Really!!! With 2 picks saints classified as winners?

I am in a loop, I am voicing my opinion. In a nutshell I do not want this to turn out to be a 2011 draft. Call me spoiled are whatever but after 2006 draft when Sean Payton 1st took over I expect/judge all drafts to 2006.

The Review: The Saints did not have many picks but selected a group of tough, physical players. Cooks was the Biletnikoff Award winner as the nation's top receiver at Oregon State last season. Jean-Baptiste is a big corner (6-foot-3) and Sunseri will provide nice depth at safety.

the first to media names so yeah they are liked and hyped. Sunseri will save the later part of the draft for the saints. other than that it is the same ol same ol. couple players stick for a year or two get cut and we keep 3.

a couple of gems here and there does not cover up the average job we do drafting in the later rounds

I pray each year and hold out hope for each pick to make an impact some where some how. i will do the same again this year

yeah that is why we got a whirlpool club every year with pretty much the same players. they rotate out as contracts expire.

the success rate maybe higher than in the past it is not an injury to take lightly. it is a major injury and still career ending for most players.

Oh, the Saints are winning the Bowl. Cooks will be rookie of the year no doubt. He will put up TO and Randy Moss type numbers. This is a true number one playing with Drew Brees and Jimmy Graham. And Stills runs 4,3 good routes and catches the ball. 50+ passing TD. Plus the hands and ball skills of Byrd and Bailey and Baptise. I think Champ Baileys leadership and 15 plays a game and a few game changers in the playoffs just like Sharper did will get us another one. Who Dat!

Re: Really!!! With 2 picks saints classified as winners?

Two other points of contention: 1.) Fortt the LB from Cal will be moved to ILB to take advantage of his speed and coverage ability and 2.) Powell, if healthy will be the 3rd pass rusher we needed last year.

nola_swammi 05-12-2014 12:13 AM

Re: Really!!! With 2 picks saints classified as winners?

Grade: C

Moving up for Cooks was costly but he should be a star for New Orleans. Jean-Baptiste Is a perfect fit in Rob Ryan’s press defense as long as he can sure up his tackling. The Saints lost their third-round pick in the Cooks trade, and overall this is just an average group after the first two picks. Fortt could never stay healthy at Cal. Sunseri is a decent backup safety option and special teams contributor. The intrigue is Powell in the fifth round. Injuries really torpedoed his college career.

I gave it an F because I (last time I'll mention this even if I end up being right) believe Jean-Baptiste will be another Arrington. He'll show some flashes, but'll end up with cheek imprints in the bench until he moves on.

I'm liking the bottom end of the draft more and more. Most of those kids just need a bit of luck to be big contributors for us.

I'm still hoping for some more OL material to show. The lack of that brought my grade way down.

So I'll take my grading up right with my hopes. Not because of the Jean Baptiste pick, but in spite of it.
