I am not sure who is actually driving this Bill. The Workmans Comp is not paid to the employee by the State in Louisiana. It is either paid by the Employer (Self Insured), or the Employers Insurance Company... All I can sort out is that either Benson or an Insurance company has a politician in their pocket to try and push legislative change that only effects professional athletes.

Considering what Benson or his insurance company paid in 2013 in Workmans Comp to the below, I can understand his pains but lets not go making laws only when it suits you..

On IR by Sep 5th before the Season Start (had to cost a few million at least)
Will Smith
Johnathan Vilma
Chris Givens
Kenyon Coleman
Victor Butler
Joeseph Morgan
Eric Olsen
Aj Davis
Chris Chamberlain

Shouldn't the players have injury clauses in their contracts? Most if not all of them receive signing bonuses that are more than most of us will make in 20 years if not our entire life. I kind of have to side with Benson on this one. If he is forced to pay the higher costs on workers comp insurance guess who that cost gets passed down to.

Stop being baited into the Class warfare brother. They keep you thinking of the 3 and forgetting about the 300. Only the top 9 players have signing bonuses over $1m, after you get out of the top 20 (Less than 1/2) its $150k or less.

Contracts have nothing to do with compensation when someone gets hurt and cant work. Unless there is an injury clause and that's only for a top few.

Josh Hill - $5k signing Bonus.. WTF does that cover? He makes around $500k a year but nearly all of that is paid during the season in game checks.

Practice Squad players fall into this as well..

"If" this is Benson or whom ever it is they are not passing on costs, they are limiting compensation to employees that put food on their table.

Again, everyone needs to have the same rules. The state can screw Andy Tanner with this Law because he is a professional athlete but Rita Benson gets hurt and cant make it to the office a week gets full benefits? Sorry but thats bullsh1t.

Every once in a while Benson has to piss off the state.

NFLPA just sent warning to all players about signing with the Saints. It is even approved yet! Typical union scare tactics.

I don't think this has anything to do with class warfare but has to do with risk and compensation calculations.

As an owner I don't see a problem in trying to cut costs where I can. Especially if someone is not making the full amount of their contact at the time of injury.

Of course this would make the benefit less attractive to potential players. They know the risk of injury is high and it is a valuable benefit to have.

Can't say what's driving the bill either other than a Business man asking for regulation standards to help cut costs to run his business. The state dictates the policy's that the insurer has to follow. Kinda like Obamacare.

And the player say more at risk than say a receptionist, accountant or bank teller.

Question have about this is that with all the special concessions government representatives have given to Benson and the Saints to Bless us with their presence in the state - isn't the money the Saints paying into the workman's comp fund suppose to be one of those benefits that comes back to the state?!?

Not a Big Government, or Government Solutions (yeah, I know) type of guy...

but I don't believe in special handouts, legislation to organizations no matter what their size...

what's good for one should be good for all - none of this Orwellian "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" BS...

...and before anyone spouts off "economic impact" studies by said university - that science is about as sound as a witch doctor thowing down a beggar's pan of chicken bones...

...and usually done by a grad student while the professor is giving private instruction to some remedial co-eds...

As stated before in this thread. In Louisiana the State does not receive or manage workman's comp funds. Employers are either self insured or insured through their agency of choice.. So the employees receive their check either directly from the employer or through the insurance company the employer pays.

I called it class warfare because any way we try and frame it, its one very niche company buying law for their benefit. Notice it is specifically worded towards professional athletes, not NFL, so it will greatly reduce Benson's payments for LWCC to cover the Saints and Hornets.

Here is where it gets all fked up for me. The thoughts are NFL and NBA players are rich, they can afford it... The reality is that professional baseball, hockey, and soccer players in Louisiana make crumbs but will be effected as well.

I have no issue with law being passed, people are free to go to another state, I have a problem with bought law.
