Saints DB's Couldn't Wait To Start Competing
 

The New Orleans Saints' defensive backs stand out as a competitive bunch. So it should come as no surprise that they didn’t wait for organized team activities next week to find a way to start battling each other on the field.

Spearheaded by cornerback Keenan Lewis, who is from the west bank of New Orleans, the Saints’ DBs have been getting together this offseason for group workouts at local parks.

That group has included big-name newcomers Champ Bailey and Jairus Byrd in a secondary that is now jam-packed with talent. But, as Bailey said, that won’t do the Saints any good if it doesn’t translate onto the field.

“It can look good on paper. I love our potential, but we’ve got a lot of work to do,” said Bailey, a future Hall of Famer with 15 seasons and 12 Pro Bowls under his belt. “We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. We’ve got to find out how to work together and mesh and improve. Because that’s really what wins you games is playing together and being a great team.”

So far, though, Bailey said he likes what he has seen from his new teammates.

“A young group. Hungry. I haven’t met one guy that didn’t work hard or didn’t want to be great. So that spells some great things for us,” said Bailey, who said his belief in the Saints’ championship potential has been strengthened by his early impressions of his new teammates.

Our secondary has the potential to dominate opposing offenses.......they have talent and they have heart. The Saints could easily have a shut down secondary. When this defense gels they will be scary.

I like the mix. Lot of versatile guys and different styles. You can throw Lewis, Robinson, Bailey, Bush, Byrd out there on one down and run with the receivers man on man, next down you can go with Lewis, White, Baptiste, Vacarro and play smashmouth and jam at the line. And we have safeties that can cover really well, and corners who can hit/tackle really well. Going to be hard for any offense to know what exactly they're going to be doing on a given play because these DB's can do so many different things.

Thats what Fortt out of Cal was drafted for. His athleticism and speed will allow him to cover the flat seemlessly.

I'm not getting duped anymore, seen it too many times. It looks good but some of them are fragile. Not questioning the talent only the ability to stay on the field.

Vaccaro needs to be healthy. For some reason, I think Sunseri will see alot of action and will make some plays.

lets see if the football IQ and reaction speed can match workout numbers first. in college that was a bit of an issue. pro ball is quicker so it maybe a bigger issue

lets see what the coaches can do with the kid.

One thing I like is that Ryan seems to play everyone in various packages. With so many substitutions it may help keep a lot of these guys injury free.
