New Orleans Saints safety Jairus Byrd has back surgery
 

New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton announced Thursday that safety Jairus Byrd has had surgery on his back and will return to the team in a week.

Payton, speaking after the team's first OTA that was open to the media, said the surgery "didn't need to be done" but that Byrd and the team both thought it best to get it cleared up now. Payton said if Byrd was having the same issue during the season he would have just received treatment rather than having surgery.

"He'll start up with training camp with no problem," Payton said.

PFT and especially Darin Gantt seem to enjoy stirring the pot a little bit and being alarmists when it comes to the Saints, but I do have to wonder if the back issue was disclosed when he signed. We gave a lot of money to a guy who already has a bad foot and now this....

It's just a simple disc surgery and they probably just want to make sure he doesn't hurt himself picking up the Super Bowl trophy. :greendevil:

Yeah, there is no way the Saints would sign him and give him all that money if he wasn't good to go.

Why so? There are minor minimally invasive back surgeries done all the time now to remove scar tissue, repair degenerative discs, and such that have near 100% success rates and short recovery times.

To me this sounds like something he has been playing with already at a high level. The alleviation of any existing pain will only improve his play and there is more than enough time for a full recovery.

Well, I can say that there is no such thing as "simple disc surgery". I know. I had it back in Novemeber and I am still not at 80%. I understand that he is an athlete. I'm a Soldier. We both have to keep our bodies in shape. But when the Dr has to cut through muscles..... it takes a lot of time for it to heal properly.

Trust me, this isn't "simple". This isn't a good thing to have done three months before a season.

I doubt that you had exactly the same surgery that Byrd had. There actually are "simple disc surgeries" that are minimally invasive that avoid damage to soft tissues, that have near 100% success rates, and full recovery times of a month or so in average patients, not in athletes.

Which sounds like exactly what this is, if people read the interview with SP he basically said;

If this were the regular season, he would have treatment on it and wouldn't miss a beat, but because its Late May-Early June it makes perfect sense to get it fully cleared up altogether

Stop overreacting people, you think we would have given him all that money if we didn't know every single thing about him physically

$56 million investment and has back surgery before he steps foot on the practice field. Not sure why anyone wouldn't be at least a tad bit concerned.

Once again, there are many varying degrees of back surgery. The latest technique for cleaning up discs (word is that is what he had) is a method that uses a laser inserted into a small incision that is far more accurate, far less invasive and has a fraction of the recovery time. So, no, I am not in the least a tad bit concerned.

By the way, having a corn removed or a hangnail removed is classified as foot surgery.

Depends if you think that SP didn't know about this when we signed him

A lot of people sound like this is the end of the world, once again - why would we give a guy 56 million without knowing everything about him physically

SP knew byrd had this and chose to get it fixed because its still 4 months until the season

Sounded scary at first, but I have every confidence Loomis et al knew about this prior to the signing. No way you would sign a player to that much cash and have this come as a surprise! JMHO....

He's good. He wasn't his contract money good. Also, there's no such thing as minor back surgery for a pro football player. But, he's a Saint, and if healthy, is a big improvement over last years starters. WHO DAT!
