Graham gets $13 million this year, $8 million next year

Quote:

Per a source with knowledge of the contract, Graham received $12 million to sign, along with a $1 million base salary for 2014. That’s $13 million in the first year (math!) and a cap number of $4 million.
That suddenly frees up an additional $3.3M on the 2014 cap. Just like several of us have been attempting to point out. THAT is how the Saints can afford $10M per year.

Again with the # magic! We have by far the best front office. As much as I fussed I'm glad he is still a Saint. He said he will be a Saint as long as Brees is. 4 year deal makes sense. I said 3yr/30 million and was only a year off.

My guess is he's taking a stab at the many who keep screaming "greedy" or "trade"

Oh, and by the way, any unused cap is rolled into the following year's cap. This gives the Saints an insurance policy that they can collect upon next year if not needed this year.

Fortunately, there was never any chance of his wearing any other uniform.

I'm just glad this is over and its done. Too much drama and the media trying to make it player vs team and player vs coach/GM.

Happy he remains a Saint but very relieved the off season drama is over.

Nitpicking, but the 2009 defense allowed 341 points: 21.3 per game ranked 20th in the league. Ranked 25th in yards per game 357.8

Last years defense was better(4th in yards and points) than anything Gregg Williams ever fielded, even without all the turnovers

cbssportsline reporting it's for 2 years at $21 million. Not sure what's up with that.

Incorrect, we could have tagged him twice for 6 million less than that, and we don't have the cap for that 2-yr/21million scenario

Re: Jimmy Graham SIGNS Contract

Wonder at this point if we have designs on that cap room since we have something like $4.6 million under now. Some veteran depth on the DL might be nice, or maybe even another WR or RB. You never know what's going to shake out from the first round of cuts.

Oh I knew it was wrong. Every other outlet is reporting the 4 year deal. And why would the team even agree to a 2 year deal? More sense for all parties to do longer term.

I think we keep the room for emergency use; in-season injuries and the like. And whatever room we have rolls over into next year, so it helps there to

If the Saints choose to cut him after two years that is what it would be. The deal contained $20 million guaranteed, including a $12 million signing bonus and an $8 million roster bonus that becomes effective following the 2014 season. That means the following:

Year one: $12 million signing bonus prorated over the 4 year term of the deal ($3M per year) plus a base salary of $1M. Cap hit $4M and total paid $13M

Year two: $8M roster bonus and the remaining $9M of prorated signing bonus due if Graham is not retained for year three. Cap hit $17M

If the Saints decide after year two to move on then it is a 2 year deal worth at least $21M ($4M year one + $17M year two).

Re: Jimmy Graham SIGNS Contract

We all knew he was going to sign eventually. That's not really a surprise. Fortunately, he didn't cost quite as much as it was once looking like. That's why you fight that battle of position designation, from the Saints' perspective. Screw all the morons in the media who were acting like they were slapping him in the face. If you want to keep a player, you do what's necessary, and if Jimmy had a problem with it, then he could have freely walked.

Not to nitpick, but after he was slapped with the Franchise Tag he could not have "freely" walked. Not without sitting out this upcoming year by not signing the tag...

I'm talking about walking away from the deal. Whether that meant sitting out the season or playing under the tag and then leaving. If he just couldn't accept the saints point of view and felt "dissed", or whatever, then he didn't have to sign a long term deal.

The point is that the Saints can only afford so much and you can't fault them for doing whatever they could to bring the price down. Just like everybody understands the player's desire to make more. I understood that, but didn't want to see the Saints cave and give into an absurd amount of money. I'm relatively pleased about where they were able settle on.
