What if's quesiton: Jeff Blake

I always wondered what would have happened if Jeff Blake would have got another shot to compete with Brooks. Mcarthy never gave the guy a chance to even compete, he was a seasoned vet that got us rolling strong for our first playoff win. I know Blake wasn't a stellar QB but certainly better than Brooks as a student of the game. We likely would have found the playoffs again.

Also thought Blake got the shaft ... it's a shame.

I agree. He wasn't a terrible QB. I actually thought he was pretty good.

Blake was a notorious locker room problem. There's a reason someone of his talent bounced around the league so much. The Ravens and Cardinals both dumped him with multiple years left on his contract.

Blake was better at running the O better than Brooks. Blake fit the scheme. Brooks stunk the scheme up.

I was excited when the Saints signed Blake; I believe he got shafted after his injury.

I didn't know that. That would explain it.

Hindsight, I sensed we would have been better of with Blake and was opposed to Brooks as the official starter without any real competition.

Our first playoff victory was one serious fluke with the Milne recovery and Jackson hauling in 3 TDs or whatever it was, it was beyond NFL parody. The majority of that season had a lot to do with Blake.

Play action and the best deep ball in the game. If he would have returned I think it's fair to say we would have been better off big picture.
Mcarthy had tunnel vision with Brooks, having drafted him in Green Bay.

I sincerely doubt that. There was a reason that dude was on 5 different teams in 5 years. By the time he got to the Saints he was already past his prime (his last good season before that was '96 and this was 2001, keep in mind), and he was not the kind of QB who is going to win you many games with defenses as bad as the Saints had back then.

If this is supposed to be take-a-poke-at-Aaron-Brooks-time, more power to ya I guess, but he and Blake were pretty much the same exact guy.

I liked the way Blake looked on the field.....kind of like a field General.

He had a few good "fantasy years" but I think as an actual player he was limited.

This is the truth.

I don't know that I'd say they were the same guy......but by and large I agree with a lot of your post. But even though I don't think they were the same guy, I do believe that if Blake hadn't gotten hurt, basically the same thing would have happened............they've have probably gotten into the playoffs in 00.......maybe even woulda won that game........but then in 01 they'd have come right back down to earth, to like 7-9 or 8-8. Brooks would have probably been the starting QB by 2002......2003 at the latest. Then you have to wonder, if that had happened......would we have gotten Brees? Because how can you be sure that the Saints would have been fully certain Brooks wasn't the answer by 06, if he didn't start until 02 or 03, as opposed to 00 ? For those of you who like having Brees around, maybe you should be glad Brooks played as long as he did, instead of of tossing around this ridiculous "what if?" about Blake that always seems to come up every time people somehow forget just how dangerous Brooks was as a QB early in his career.

Yeah this is crazy.

The writing was on the wall for Blade. He wasn't doing that awesome but he did enough and had the back ground to be the starter. Once he got injured and Brooks got his shot... it was done. Brooks lit it up. People can say what they want but they only recall the last couple of years of Brooks. The dude got us to the play offs and got us our first play off win ever to that point. Forget Blake...

Jeff Blake was one of the best deep ball throwers of all time. Too bad for him he never refined his short to intermediate routes. His passes to Pickens and Scott in Cincinnati was a thing of beauty.

Brooks will never get enough credit from the masses. He was a 4th round draft pick who beat the odds and put up record breaking numbers for us. I think Saint fans focus too much on the negatives to appreciate what he was able to accomplish here.

I too liked Blake and he did throw a great deep ball.

If he had it in him he would have caught on with another team.
