Hype Reel: Brandin Cooks is ABSURD

It's not fair for Brandin Cooks to play with Drew Brees under Sean Payton, but life isn't fair.

Can't say that I have been this excited. Ever. Sproles was a great contributor to the Saints' offense. Fantastic moves and balance. Cooks is like Sproles on steroids. He has the acceleration and speed of an Olympic sprinter and the agility and balance of a gymnast.

My first thought after seeing his highlight reels was....damn, just think what he will do with Payton calling the plays and Bree's at QB.

Cooks will open the field up for Graham and the passing game will open up the running game. I think every team that picked ahead of the Saints' in this year's draft screwed up royal by letting us get our hands on Cooks.

If covering Graham gave opposing D coordinators nightmares the prospect of covering Graham and Cooks will be giving then heart attacks. Better have 911 on speed dial and the defib unit on the sidelines.

Imagine going 4 wide with Colston, Stills, Cooks, Graham and Morgan against a dime package, then bust up the middle with Khiry Robinson.

Khiry at full speed at the 2nd level versus nothing but DB's. OUCH!!!

Hopefully he makes an immediate impact. If he ever gets behind the coverage, forget it. It's like trying to catch a Cheetah from behind.

No worries... we will be properly equipped to handle any heart attack contingencies.

Pick your poison. Quick and rather painless or slow and very painful. Either way, you're dead.

And let's not forget we now have a D secondary and pass rush designed to give the ball back to Brees. 2009 de ja vu.....all over again.

Agree, but I think this team has many more A-players than that team did.

How are they able to have 4 WRs, a TE, and a RB on the field at the same time ? ;)

But yeah I am enthusiastic too. Won't be long.

Graham would be the 4th receiver, I didn't mean 4 WR's. Quit nitpickin' :p

LOL....No seriously man, you listed:

1. Colston

2. Stills

3. Cooks

4. Graham

5. Morgan

With Khiry in the backfield as # 6.

Though now after typing all that out, I'm intrigued by what hopefully will be an occasional 5-wide set with that crew!

It won't be "immediate". Cooks is so fast it just seems that way.

Yep, in fact he just scored... Saints 7, Falcons 0.

No keys ... With a healthy Morgan back it's gonna get scary for defenses , they'll be basically using the red or blue wire approach when defending us knowing anything can set it off ...

I'm rooting for Coleman to make the roster too ... Lotta height lotta speed. He and Graham flanked out on one side of the field with Stills Cooks and Morgan on the other would be a hissyfit for defenders.

If Coleman can catch, I'd say he can have Toon's roster spot.

My money is on Toon over Coleman.

Coleman to practice squad for 2 years.

I hope you're right, Danno. I was a fan of Toon when we drafted him. He just hasn't shown me anything, so far. Hope he proves me wrong.

Re: Hype Reel: Brandin Cooks is ABSURD

In 2013 our O always seemed to be a step behind. Sproles and Moore were nonexistent for much of the season. The receivers couldn't get separation and Brees didn't have time in the pocket to wait. The result was 37 sacks.

Looking at 2014, by position the Saints may field the fastest receiving corp in the NFL.

When the Saints drafted Toon, a buddy from WI's first two words were "Good Luck." His thought the Saints would have a hard time keeping him on the field. Always one nagging injury after another at WI. His opinion was he wasn't tough enough for the NFL.

Looks like he he has been dead on so far. Considering the big catches that he didn't make last year, I have a feeling Toon's days could be numbered.

Re: Hype Reel: Brandin Cooks is ABSURD

Not to be a jerk but comparing toons highlight tape to Coleman's is
embarrassing ...

The first two plays are plays we'd never see out of toon , he's a catch and fall kinda guy

Thus guy though at 6"6 can move , imagine a Marques Colston that can burn people ...

Plus this guy seems to catch better with 1 arm than toon could with 3

Thanks. Coleman reminds me of a younger, faster Colston. Another good candidate for the Saints free agent to stating NFL receiver factory.

It may boil down to team chemistry. Payton and Loomis are big on the character thing. If a player doesn't fit, it doesn't seem to matter how much talent they have.

Re: Hype Reel: Brandin Cooks is ABSURD

There are some negatives with this guy for sure.
Bra don Coleman Negatives

Hands are a question mark, but many of his drops came on balls that were off the mark that he failed to properly adjust to.

Seemed to frequently not be on the same page as his quarterbacks in terms of timing and depth of routes, but it's difficult to assign blame to the receiver or quarterback without knowing the exact design of the play.

Surprisingly inefficient against press coverage.
He has the strength to fight off press coverage, but lacks the burst to pull away when he wins the physical battle.

Speed is adequate, but he's slow off the snap and takes quite a few steps to really get moving.

Has the size to break tackles, but otherwise doesn't provide much of a threat after the catch.

Lacks the speed and athleticism to lose defensive backs in man coverage.

Every reception is contested because he can't break free from man coverage.

Considering his size, his catch radius is relatively small due to a lack of agility in short bursts.

Struggles to adjust to poorly placed balls on shorter routes, which limits his effectiveness as a possession receiver.

Too hesitant as a blocker.

Needs to realize he has the size to be a dominant blocker, even without perfect technique, and become more aggressive.

yep mental lapses are the huge knock on Coleman. But his supporters point out the system at Rutgers and the QB play as factors.

well we will soon find out.

If i remember right he was reported already to have a couple of drops in the OTA. not a good start. as of now i have him on PS at the start of the season. he needs work.

but size and speed like this does not come down the pike that often. so gamble and coach the kid unless he just does not get it.

give him a free 24/7 pass to work with the jug machine

I have to admit i would love to see him line up in the slot opposite of Jimmy. with cook outside on Jimmy's side of the field and Still on Coleman side.

Colston had literally the exact same rookie OTA's, dropped a bunch of passes, showed up out of shape but Brees saw what he could become and lobbied for him to Payton

Hopefully we can say the same thing about Coleman soon

Re: Hype Reel: Brandin Cooks is ABSURD

Got to have "hands" in the NFL and good focus because the windows are tight.
Have to be able to play in the moment.
Lots of players get away without it in college and just can't raise their levels when moving up.
Payton/Loomis have been a good evaluators of talent and projecting upside potential.
Our possession guys fell off last season, ie Moore, Stills.
They had the ability to seperate and somehow disappeared mid-season.
I hope somebody steps up in that role whether green horn or a veteran.
Henderson has lost a step (or two) and Meach is still Meach.
Some added speed to stretch the field would open up the underneath routes.
My long shot, Andy Tanner, can't seem to get past the PSquad, and it won't be any easier this year either.
MAN! I'm ready for some football.

Damn. The kid has some moves and he seems to have good hands. If he was a little taller he would have went earlier.
