Saints sign two undrafted rookies

The Saints have added two undrafted rookies who had previous short stints with other NFL clubs, signing linebacker Marcus Thompson (ex-Dolphins) and nose tackle Tyrone Ezell (ex-Texans) on Tuesday, the club said.

A Rutgers product, Thompson (6-1, 250) recorded 5.5 sacks in 2013 and was one of the team’s defensive MVPs. The Dolphins waived him on July 1.

Ezell (6-4, 305) had a three-day stint with Houston in May. He was a 12-game starter for the University of Pittsburgh in 2013 and was a team captain.

In corresponding roster moves, the Saints waived/injured third-year outside linebacker Cheta Ozougwu and undrafted rookie nose tackle Moses McCray.

The Saints have all 90 roster spots filled.

305 is a bit light for a NT.

They only need a camp body until Jenkins is activated from the PUP.

Jay Ratliff was the best NT in the league for a while and he was under 290. Jason Hatcher played nose last year and he's 298. Kyle Williams is 303. Leverage and strength are more important than just being a big fat guy.

Being a huge guy is more important if you are in a defence where you are expected to clog two gaps on your own. If you are a one gap defender power and explosiveness is much more important.

I disagree. 305 is just fine.

I'll take any news that's not about Lebron James or Michael Sam.

keep an eye on Marcus Thompson out of Rutgers. he may just make the practice squad. diamond in the rough for special teams? versatile. a bit of FB and DE in is history. 4.66 40 and a 3 cone of 7.09 aint shabby. he is a hustler coming out college

Marcus Thompson
School: Rutgers
Position: DE

Positive: Two-year starter who posted a career-best 51 tackles and 5.5 sacks last season. Undersized college defensive end who plays with great intensity. Displays terrific movement skills, bends his knees, and quickly changes direction. Explosive, aggressive, and chases the action in every area of the field. Effectively uses his hands to protect himself, quick off the snap and displays a short burst of speed.

Negative: Overwhelmed at the point of attack by large offensive lineman or disrupted from the action by the initial block. Does not possess the long speed necessary to pursue plays.

Analysis: Thompson was a competitive defender who made plays based on his hustle but lacks the size and speed numbers to consistently contribute at the next level.
