We have real safeties this year. It’s been bad for a long time. How bad has it been? Let’s recap:

That’s right. This team started Roman Harper and Josh Bullocks at safety for three years. Outside of that one guy who was temporarily great for us in 2009, we haven’t fielded a safety that ranks above competent in eight years.

But, Who Dat Nation, times, they are a’changing. And by a’changing, I mean getting a whole lot better. Not only do we have Kenny Vaccaro, one of the finest rookie defenders of 2013, but we have an unheralded fella by the name of Jairus Byrd, and JAIRUS BYRD is for real.

But before we can fully appreciate the beauty of 2014’s starting safeties, let us remember our humble beginnings.
