Champ Bailey

Looks like he not exactly lighting it up and has missed the last 2 practices to injury. I think he is going to retire before the season starts.
If so do you trust P-Rob or do you think we try and bring someone else in at least for backup. I hear P-Rob is looking decent.

Re: Champ Bailey

Is he injured or just resting? I have seen nothing about him being injured

To answer your question; P-Rob/White will fight for the #2... I doubt we bring anyone else in

Re: Champ Bailey

He was a no-show at practice and Payton refused to answer questions about it

Re: Champ Bailey

Wow on the Bailey thing.

To answer the question I trust P-Rob, if he's healthy I strongly believe he can almost as good as Keenan. Go back and look at the last season he played in a man-to-man scheme, he was easily our best corner. He was also our best corner all through last preseason and was starting to take snaps away from Greer when he got hurt.

Re: Champ Bailey

At his age injuries occur more often....whether it's an old injury that reoccurs or the wear and tear catches up to you. I never expected to see him spending that much time out there. He will see a lot of rotation snaps but will be kept fresh for the long run. Payton brings the older players along at a different pace than the young guns.

Re: Champ Bailey

Yeah I've heard he's getting beat quite a bit in coverage. P Rob supposedly is looking great and Rob Ryan's defense is a perfect fit for him so I'm willing to have condidence in Robinson.

Jeff Duncan posted this @nola.com:

"Just while I was chatting our photographer, Michael DeMocker, found a photo from yesterday's workout that captures a sequence where it appears Bailey rolled his right foot under Nick Toon at the end of a play. Pure speculation but it certainly looks like the kind of play where he might have been injured. He apparently played one more down after and was not seen on the field again so it's a fairly good assumption...."

I'm sure Bailey will make the roster. We don't need him to be an every down corner. He needs to come in on pass plays, float, and pick off balls.

Comment by Jeff Duncan, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune on I...
@Dalikern I have no clue as to the status of his absence or potential injury. But I'd be surprised if he doesn't make the team. The Saints will have a role for him by the end of camp. My guess is they'd like him to be a hybrid, third CB in sub packages. Patrick Robinson is clearly the starting CB opposite Lewis at this point.

The fact that he wasn't even present I shorts is curious and worrisome, and the fact that Payton refused to comment on it are certainly cause for concern. Did he rein jute his foot? Was he cut?

Payton says they never talk about injuries in training camp and besides saying he saw Byrd back sooner than later that's the truth

I thought it was a bad signing. He's too old and had no real impact with Denver last year.

It was a really small contract. If the doesn't make the team, the Saints aren't out much.

Re: Champ Bailey

We seriously don't need him. If it works out great, if not we still have a solid secondary.

ChrisXVI 08-01-2014 07:55 PM

Re: Champ Bailey

Bailey is washed up... It was rose-tinted glasses that made us think otherwise. He looked completely average in training camp so far and now he's hurt... It didn't hurt to give him a shot but Patrick Robinson is proving to be the #2 CB.

Jack Vegas 08-01-2014 08:23 PM

Re: Champ Bailey

We won't cut Champ. There's a ballhawking role for him at the nickel/slot where he can play back and bait the QB into picks the same way Sharper did.

Even if he only plays 10-12 snaps a game, that's probably better than what Jean-Baptiste or Sweeting is going to give you.

lets see how far he goes in camp before we hang the guy, he was brought in to get a ring so let him get a ring.

This is my take exactly

It's surprising to me how quickly some seem to turn on people without even having a clear idea about the circumstances surrounding a certain situation. I guess it's the off-season anticipation that's making people jumpy...

I've seen lots of video/pictures of Bailey talking to DBs and mentoring them. I think this could help us a lot in the long run.

Re: Champ Bailey

I hear we may keep 5 corners: Lewis, Robinson, White, Baptiste, Bailey; and 5 safeties: Vaccaro, Bush, Byrd, Ball, Warren...

Re: Champ Bailey

We had the #2 pass defense in the NFL last year. Bailey isn't going to break the team if he misses some games. I still think he makes the roster.

Euphoria 08-04-2014 03:58 PM

Re: Champ Bailey

I think they originally brought him in as a leader for that secondary.

What ever he contributes is a plus. Probably a sprang ankle of some sort so just a wait and see. Even if he isn't able to practice the rest of camp he could be a Day one starter.
