Mike Triplett: No clear leader in Saints' center battle
1 Attachment(s)
It’s a difficult position to judge with the naked eye from the sideline in practice. Even coach Sean Payton said after Saturday’s scrimmage that the only way to truly evaluate an offensive lineman is to go back and look at the tape (not to mention knowing the assignments).
I did notice Lelito making two very nice blocks on two of the Saints’ big plays during Saturday’s scrimmage. But before that, Goodwin had stood out to me a couple more times in some of the Saints’ physical run drills. No clear leader in New Orleans Saints' center battle - ESPN Win-win situation - I'm hoping Lelito can make a very strong case... |

Tie goes to the young guy.

Old bull vs. young bull. Smarts goes to the old bull unless the young bull runs the old bull out. So far the young bull has not.

Concerned about this line. Brees can work with C WR's or less. Hoping it's good enough.

Concerned about the center position.

Q, why are you worried, brother?!? Coach Payton was confident before the Goodwin signing in Lelito... We've got two great players, one experienced, seasoned veteran returning and one young, surging player putting up a great competition... Grubbs, the guard, now that's who worries me... |

Goodwin was an upgrade to De La Puente.
Lelito has pulled even with Goodwin. Lelito will only get better. Sounds like good news to me. |

I don't see a lack of a "clear leader" as a negative assessment. It can be spun a lot of ways, what I keyed on was Evans twice saying Goodwin was the Goodwin of old, which for me sort of sets my expectations. Marry that with a first year Center (Lelito) playing at the same bar and it sounds like our back up will be as good as our starter.
If we brought back DLP or headhunted a third Center I would be worried they were both mediocre. |
