Coleman - Most Improved from OTA's to TC

Opening night for Coleman, other rookies
August, 8, 2014
By Mike Triplett
Rookie receiver Brandon Coleman has been the clear choice for the New Orleans Saints' "Most Improved" player from organized team activities to training camp.

And since the 6-foot-6, 225-pounder was already among the fan favorites in this year’s undrafted rookie class, Coleman will be one of the most compelling reasons to watch the second half of tonight’s preseason opener against the St. Louis Rams.

Rookie receiver Brandon Coleman on his preseason play: "It's my job to get the coaches to notice me."
"Right now, the fans can say all they want. But it’s my job to get the coaches to notice me," Coleman said when asked about the attention he has received from fans so far.

It’s easy for Coleman to stay humble after he admittedly struggled during OTAs in minicamp, dropping too many passes and showing some hesitancy in his route-running.

Over the past two weeks, however, the former Rutgers standout has made several nice catches while playing at a faster speed.

"Just the tempo of the game and just how to play at the pace," Coleman said when asked where he has made the biggest strides. "Just how to be a pro on and off the field. I took that, went home with it for three weeks and then came back and tried to just incorporate that into this camp."

Coleman was the most highly touted of the Saints' undrafted rookies for two reasons. One, he’s a massive target, which will make him a unique offensive weapon if he can realize his potential. Secondy, he was highly rated by many scouting analysts heading into the draft for that reason.

...
The Saints' receiver position is awfully crowded right now, with more experienced guys Robert Meachem, Nick Toon, Joe Morgan and Andy Tanner all fighting for the fourth and fifth receiver jobs. So I don’t expect Coleman or fellow rookie Seantavius Jones to be able to leapfrog all those guys and crack the actual rotation this season.

However, it is possible that the Saints could keep Coleman on the active 53-man roster as a weekly inactive in a sort of "redshirt" capacity. That is something they have done in the past with talented young playmakers. But to get there, Coleman will have to keep earning that "Most Improved" title throughout the preseason.

Obviously Coleman won’t be the only rookie worth watching tonight since so many of them should get a ton of work....

Fellow draft picks like cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste, linebackers Khairi Fortt and Ronald Powell, and safety Vinnie Sunseri have started to pick things up and make more plays in recent days.

Good news about Coleman, because he didn't look so hot at all in OTA's. I'd be surprised if he made the 53, but if he explodes in these pre-season games he may not clear waivers for the PS.

I agree, I really doubt he makes the 53 man roster. I think we're pretty set at WR with Colston, Stills, Cooks, Toon and Meachem/Morgan. But Coleman could get a "mysterious" ailment and be stashed on the IR.

Toon and Morgan are unknown factors basically and Meachem has seen better days. Coleman actually has a good shot in my opinion especially if he continues to improve.
I could see Meachem as the odd man out.(it figures I finally learned how to spell his name).:dunce:

It has sounded like Toon's had the best camp, for him, so far, so I don't see him being cut. And watching an interview with Brees the other day, talking about installing a new play, and Colston and Meachem will make adjustments to the routes, and Brees will hit them. Then the younger receivers say "that's not how it was drawn up" and Brees responded that its a thing he has with Colston and Meachem since they've been working together for like nine years. If Brees is that comfortable with him, and Meachem happens to be our best blocking WR and makes the plays when he has to, I could see him staying. Morgan... always seems like he's injured. But we'll see how that goes.

Irregardless, we have a very talented WR corp this coming season

I think Morgan isn't kept. Just a gut.

If they kept a spot for AA for years, they can make a spot for Coleman. I have a good feeling about this kid.....especially after I read that comment by Colston.

A drop earlier, now a pass goes right through his hands, off his helmet and into the hands of a defender...

Yeah, he is screwed. I see practice squad in his future.

Another injury will seal his fate. All the talent in the world but the dude is glass.

From what I saw I wouldn't waste a spot on the practice squad for him. Awfull.

Coleman was bad today, but we can't rule him out after one game. It's too small of a sample size. Let's see if he can turn it around in the 3 preseason games we have left. He'll get his chances to redeem himself.

The drops were bad but he just looks lost in general and very tentative. He false started really bad once but the ref didn't see it. I'm not saying cut him now, but if he doesn't do a lot better he'll be gone after next week for sure.

A first year player in the first NFL game of his entire life. He was probably nervous. Give him a chance to regroup and figure things out before you start excluding him from a possible roster spot. For all you know he can come out next game and play like a Pro Bowler.

It appears the scouting reports on Coleman were spot on. All of the Colston comparisons went out of the window after watching his initial performance.

Yea they say he has small hands. Not a good trait for a guy who's only role could be that of a possession WR.

"Caught a lot of balls. That's good to see," Payton said. "He's got good hands and he's continuing to get stronger. You see that in his lower body. He's not favoring his one knee (injury from college). Obviously made enough plays today, four or five catches. That's encouraging."

If he keeps it up he may be a lock for the practice squad.

With his size; do you think he would clear waivers?

Pull'in for him too. I want to see that last name on a Saints jersey. I just wish the number was 19.

Coleman still has alot of work to do before making the squad, but Coach definitely likes those big receivers that can geaux up and get the ball...

I don't think they claim a guy for their 53 that was an undrafted free-agent, who has never taken an NFL snap, doesn't know a single play in their playbook, has a reputation for not being physical despite his size, is slow off the line and has shown that his reputation for dropping the ball is well deserved.

I just don't see it happening.

Now he could sign with another teams practice squad instead of ours. That could happen especially if he's sore about getting cut and sees a better opportunity down the line somewhere else. Now that I could see.

If anyone has their eyes open they aren't going to be impressed either.

I think more teams realize that WR do well in the Saints system and it doesn't always translates to their system. If you can't cut it for Sean then you can't cut it anywhere...

Re: Coleman - Most Improved from OTA's to TC

Colston-Stills-Cooks-Morgan now only way hes 5th is if he beats out Meachem. If they keep only two QB which i hope they do not , it should be 3 qb.If 3qb Only then an extra spot for a 4th Te or 6th wr not both an they have had 6 te on 90 training camp roster in past years it was 5 te,so i think they want a 4th te more than a 6th wr.esp with lorig the Te/Fb out hurt an most likely going to Ir now if he is close to being healed an makes 53 roster then 3 te an that could open up a spot for Coleman.
