Saints rookie Brandon Coleman's Monday practice opens Sean Payton's eyes

Saints coach Sean Payton said Monday's practice was "big" for Coleman. The former Rutgers standout came up with several nice receptions on nearly every healthy cornerback on the Saints' roster.

Meachem isn't going to make it this year. Tanner either. Colston, Cooks and Stills are locks. Morgan will likely get the nod as well as Toon. Seantavius Jones and Coleman are better options than Meachem and Tanner.

3 WR's with a history of serious injuries. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. If available later all the development will pay off as opposed to getting someone else.

Over the two preseason games, Coleman has two receptions on four targets.

(not great, not horrible)

In my humble opinion, he looked much more relaxed in the Titans game than he did in the Rams game.

I think Meachem is an easy cut because no one will pick him up. Coleman or Jones could possibly be stashed on PS, so all three would be a phone call away.
I'm not sold on Toon as a #4, but it looks like that's where we are.

Meachem and Tanner cut and just a phone call away if we things go wrong... I can live with that.

Don't care about what he did in practice. I need to see it in one of these final 2 preseason games. I need to see him play like a 6'6" receiver when guys are draped over him. To be quite honest, if morgan is healthy he is hands down the better player right now. Not even close. I say that for 2 reasons. 1) Morgan has better hands and body control when the ball is in the air 2) His speed changes the game whether he's the primary target or not which opens things up for everyone else.

Not saying coleman isn't capable of bringing his own unique set of skills to the table but I need to see it.

I just don't see them cutting a vet like Meachem for a project like Coleman. Then again, Meachem has never impressed me. But, if Colston were to go down, that would leave 2nd year Stills, rookie Cooks, 3 year project Toon, Morgan coming off a blown up knee, and UDFA Coleman. Just not likely.

Re: Saints rookie Brandon Coleman's Monday practice opens Sean Payton's eyes

If Coleman is taking 1st string snaps, could they just be evaluating how well he does with Brees instead of McCown/Griffin, since that's how it'll play out in the regular season? All of our bubble receivers (Meachem, Toon, Morgan, Coleman, etc) making the 53 will come down to who has the best chemistry with Brees, I believe. In that bunch, Meachem has the most chemistry...but I would absolutely love, love, love for one of the youngsters to snag that final WR spot.

Another thing the consider: maybe one of our NFC rivals have their collective eyes on Coleman, just waiting for him to be cut. Freakin' vultures, man...

Why do you bold all your posts? It reeks of arrogance and well, how do you emphasize anything if everything is already bolded?:p

I love the thought of a 6'6" receiver so I'm pulling for him but that being said, I hope he doesn't make the team over someone that's more deserving

bold solidarity

And apparently he stunk up the joint today in practice.

Lol. His size alone won't cut it. I simply don't think this kid has performed well enough to command a roster spot. I will be shocked if he makes the team.

I think we keep 6. I know I said 5 but after looking at the injuries of Toon, Stills and Morgan, I hope for the best but I would want some insurance, just too much liability. Even Coleman had a knee issue in college. Their combined surgeries are likely higher than their combined catches. I kid but seriously we need to keep 6. Coleman don't see it. Nice to have but we need the best on the field.

if we are smart about when we cut Coleman he could end up on PS and then helping later
Pretty risky for another team to pick up a raw player the last week of August, but Carolina does need depth, so who knows

Bill Belichick called him during draft. He picked us because of Payton and Colston. NE could pick him off waivers.

Whoever does pick him up has to stash him on their 53. And since he'd have to learn a completely new playbook, while likely not getting the required reps in practice, I just can't see a team playing the season with basically a 52 man roster.

Besides, I think Seantavious Jones is an equally talented prospect and there's probably a few others out there that Mickey and company have their eyes on for the PS.

Then again it wouldn't shock me if both were cut and not signed to our practice squad at all.

Coleman had nice TD grab yesterday. Dude (at times) looks like Colston out there.

I would love to see him make the team. But if he doesn't I will be happy with whoever makes the team. I just like the size of the guy.

Keep an eye on WR Seantavius Jones as well. He's 6-3, 200 lbs, and ran a 4.5 40. Not blazing fast but fast for a guy his size. He's a project too but a pretty good one. He graded out as a 7th/Priority FA

reminds me of Nick Toon last year. Everyone raved about the guy in camp, and how he was making all the plays. When the big lights turned on he was caught like a deer, couldn't catch a cold to save his life.

2013 Toon = 2014 Coleman

Re: Saints rookie Brandon Coleman's Monday practice opens Sean Payton's eyes

Coleman looks so much like Colston. Aside from height and build even their stride is eerily similar. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure I read that he has small hands. Not a good trait for a dude who's only niche could be that of a possession WR. He better develop impeccable fundamentals. Not impossible but steep odds.

Re: Saints rookie Brandon Coleman's Monday practice opens Sean Payton's eyes

And Colston had one thing working for him as a rookie, there was plenty of opportunity when Coach Payton got here...

Re: Saints rookie Brandon Coleman's Monday practice opens Sean Payton's eyes

I just read the entire article this thread originated from and once again Bailey is practicing as our starting CB opposite Lewis. Where are the posters who predicted him getting cut? Of course he's lost a step but he might have the best hands on the team. Apparently our coaches are not too high on PR. I expected him to be a nickel back but with hands like his and Byrds in the secondary, you'd have to expect our INTs to go up. Hopefully he's the 2014 Darren Sharper.
