5 New Orleans Saints who hurt their cause to make the roster

Re: 5 New Orleans Saints who hurt their cause to make the roster
Brandon Coleman - there was a reason he went undrafted, and that was due to being more of a body catcher and dropping passes as well as not being very fluid with his movements nor having much explosive ability. If he can get on the practice squad then great
Nick Toon - always good in practice but doesn't perform come game time. Sounds like Corey White, right? After three seasons, I think we've seen what we'll be getting from Toon. But he'll stay on the team with Stills injured Bryce Harris - big surprise to me this training camp. he was decent last year but has seem to struggle in games thus far. We seriously have a lack of depth at the tackle position... Terrence Fredrick - haven't seen much of him so can't make much of a judgement other than we are loaded at the DB position so it was a huge uphill battle from the beginning for him Tavon Rooks - had no idea why we reached for him when he was clearly predicted to be an UDFA much like it's clearly predicted that the sun will rise tomorrow. Does he make the PS just because he was drafted? I sure hope not. I'd imagine there will be some other cuts from other teams who could play the tackle position better than Rooks. |
Re: 5 New Orleans Saints who hurt their cause to make the roster
Out of the 5, two of them are tackles. The Saints will have to keep looking for o-line depth. Seems like they're always looking for o-line depth.

Re: 5 New Orleans Saints who hurt their cause to make the roster
Last year we needed a run game. O-line was most of the issue. We have some amazing talent at RB this year -- and we need to be able to use it.

Toon will make it but by default. The injuries are unclear with Stills and Morgan, the odds of either going the distance is not good. I also see Coleman working his way back in later.

Re: 5 New Orleans Saints who hurt their cause to make the roster
Harris did okay filling in last year, and we have used him in the old Zach Strief tacklle-eligible, which could mean he is being groomed. I think he is safe.
Jones gives us flexibility, although we have Lelito, which means Kelemete might make it instead. I don't see us carrying 9 OL, unless we are worried someone might get picked up. I'd rather carry 9 linemen than a second kicker Who is Frederick? shouldn't even be mentioned in this article |
Re: 5 New Orleans Saints who hurt their cause to make the roster
Reddick and Sweeting not being able to build off of making the team last year is more disappointing to me. Coleman may make the roster by default. Somebody has to line up at WR opening day. He has potential. Toon has made the roster. It's up to him to take advantage of it. Harris is a backup in the NFL. Not a bad thing. Just nothing special. Frederick never had a shot with the talent ahead of him. Rooks was a project at best and still most likely has a shot at the practice squad to get a year of seasoning.

Re: 5 New Orleans Saints who hurt their cause to make the roster
So far Toon plays like tarzan in practice then turns into Jane in the live game.I would like them to keep jones or Coleman over him.

Re: 5 New Orleans Saints who hurt their cause to make the roster
Harris is a solid swing tackle. I'm not worried about him. He's done well in games when it counted. As for Marcel Jones, the fact they moved him to guard says to me they don't have faith in him as a tackle. And with Kelemete being so good at guard, I don't see why they would keep Marcel over him.

Re: 5 New Orleans Saints who hurt their cause to make the roster
Isn't Max Starks available? solid stop-gap as a back up tackle.

Re: 5 New Orleans Saints who hurt their cause to make the roster
No real surprises. I might add FB Lorig to this list. WTF? I wish SP would be a little more forthcoming on what's up.

Re: 5 New Orleans Saints who hurt their cause to make the roster
Oh, and Toon? Rose-colored glasses, folks.
Most of us hoped and wanted him to work out...he was part of that notorious 2012 draft, and he was our 2nd pick in that draft. But that was 122nd overall, and remember Toon was a FOURTH round pick in a below-average 2012 wide receiver draft pool. Just go look back at the duds from that 2012 crew. Grant it, it takes WRs 2-4 years to really develop, but come on...this is Toon's 3rd year and he can't make those monster practices translate to the field. I knocked the crap out of the baseball in batting practice and made very few errors in practice, yet I only hit .275 lifetime and I made some egregious errors at crunch time. Point is that an individual's practice mindset can be vastly different from that same individual's game mindset. I'm no Toon, but I think we share this debilitating illness. |
Re: 5 New Orleans Saints who hurt their cause to make the roster
I hope we stash Rooks on the PS. He is quite the enigma but the scouts and coaches must have seen something in him that they really liked sine we drafted him and I hope we get to find that out down the line.

I can't believe any other team has seen enough of him to sign him at this point |

He's a 2 or 3 year project with a pretty good upside so its hard to complain about burning a late 6th on him. |
Re: 5 New Orleans Saints who hurt their cause to make the roster
Coleman and Toon may have notes in their lockers before long after the inconsistent performances...
Ravens RBs were in our defensive backfield waaay too much... |
Re: 5 New Orleans Saints who hurt their cause to make the roster
saints have little address all the issues yall are pointing out. same issues as last year.
every team we have played so far in the preseason has let me saying "Man they have better depth than we do" a dozen good safeties will only take you so far. here is to praying for a healthy year. |
Re: 5 New Orleans Saints who hurt their cause to make the roster
While we are throwing out frustrating names, #60 Thomas Welch did not look like anything much at tackle last night. Got burned several times, on one play he got thrown to the ground like a rag doll, another he was easily pushed out of the way by the defender (useless), and he whiffed on a special teams punt tackle that resulted in a big return for the Ravens. Ugh. Don't know what the TV commentators said, but I was keying in on him in the stands when the game got boring, and he was a biiiiiig part of the problem with RGIV and the endless three-and-outs. Ugh. It was ugly.
