Ryan Griffin - I was wrong (?)
Didn't get to watch last night but from what I've read so far Griffin looked pretty bad. I'm eating shoe leather today after calling Griff a better QB than McCown...
What did you all think? Is he in danger of being cut?? |
Re: Ryan Griffin - I was wrong (?)
He's a work in progress.
Unfortunately, no one films out well playing with the look squad. The writing was on the wall for a lot of the players last night. No one looked like it was worth taking a chance getting hurt, so you got what you got. Last preseason game is useless. We should just euthanize the preseason into 2 games, with a bunch of scrimmages on the side. |
Re: Ryan Griffin - I was wrong (?)
I posted this in another thread. I was there and when the game got boring, I started watching the line and ignoring Griffin and the ball...I started keying in on this backup tackle dude #60 that no one's heard of, Thomas Welch. He stunk it up terribly, most of the second quarter and pretty much the whole second half. A lot of the third downs and missed plays (bad throws from Griffin etc) were when Griff had a dude in his face because this Welch guy had been either thrown to the ground, or he was spinning around in open space looking for someone to block while the defender had just run right past him. I don't think Griffin looked good last night, but there were other forces at work, everybody on the team was playing badly.
The bottom-of-the-barrel O-line is a huge dropoff from the 1's and 2's. I've seen John Curtis games that were more exciting to watch. The pee wee games they ran in each end zone at halftime were the highlight of the night, and I'm not kidding. But it's Sean Payton we are talking about here, so my gut tells me that we keep 3 QBs and 2 kickers because you know how he likes his toys. |
Re: Ryan Griffin - I was wrong (?)
Griffin was fine with the #2's on offense. The third-team offensive line couldn't get it together. Welch and Weaver are some of the worst camp linemen I can recall in a preseason in a long, long time.

Re: Ryan Griffin - I was wrong (?)
If he can't clearly beat out McNown, then he's simply overvalued by fans who root for the local/underdog/QB of the future. That being said, I would keep him over McNown and wouldn't even blink.

He did have some drops though. We'll keep him, 1/2 the players on the field in the 2nd half won't be on the team next week. |
Re: Ryan Griffin - I was wrong (?)
I hope we keep him. He has played well enough throughout the pre-season to keep me intrigued about his potential.

Re: Ryan Griffin - I was wrong (?)
He is a developmental QB that is still developing. Hopefully with Drew and Payton tutoring him he will become everything we believe he can be. Mc Cown could be a viable option for a few games if need be.

Re: Ryan Griffin - I was wrong (?)
The deep pass to meachem was an absolute beauty of a throw, couldn't have been more accurate
Struggled with 3rd team but I wouldn't blame that on him, he had guys in the backfield the entire second half |

Re: Ryan Griffin - I was wrong (?)
That drop by Hill in the seam in the 4th QTR was a beautiful throw by Griffin, and that would have been a scoring drive had Hill not blatantly dropped the stinkin' ball. Ol' Tulane Boy can make throws, and his play with the 3rd/4th/5th/etc team last night is NOT indicative of RG1's abilities. He's composed in the face of blitzes, and he's even making calls at the line of scrimmage...he's still 50/50 on that aspect as some of his audibles are good and some are pretty bad. However, that's hard to evaluate, too, considering his audibles were for O-lineman who won't be playing for this team for much longer.
Remember he is a 2nd Year UDFA. His progress from last year is pretty clear, and he was pretty decent last year. Hell, he could be the clear back-up on a few low tier QB teams. Imagine him in another year or 2 in this system, though. We keep 3 QB's to keep those lower tier QB teams from snagging him. If McCown gets cut, he'll get picked up somewhere, too. He simply looked pretty good with the 1's not to warrant a contract with another team. |
Re: Ryan Griffin - I was wrong (?)
To he!! on judging Griffin with the 3rd,4ths and 5th, he would play well with the 1st if need be ,better than McCown. He has to start from somewhere. McCown has peaked, Griffin is just getting started.

Re: Ryan Griffin - I was wrong (?)
I hardly watched pre-season this year but every game I saw Griffin make some great throws. Kid looks like a keeper to me.

Ok. True. CAN BE. I don't think he ever will be Neither McNown or Griffin would be a lasting solution at QB, for any team. :brood: |

53 sounds like plenty, but NFL roster spots are extremely valuable and Coach Payton would not have idly released a player to retain Griffin otherwise... |

If that last line is the case then we are set. Drew isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Why pay for 2 starting QBs? Why develope a QB for someone else? These two QBs are what they are for a lack of a better phrase. McCown is a back up QB with experience that has reached his ceiling. Griffin is a young unseasoned project with a potential high ceiling. Neither are starters this week. |
