Saints Release Champ Bailey and NO Kickers left on Roster

In a shocker, Champ Bailey was released by the New Orleans Saints. The Saints also do not have any kicker on the roster as they released both Shayne Graham and Derek Dimke...

A league source tells PFT that the Saints have released Bailey, perhaps one of the day’s biggest surprises.

They were clearly in need of someone to shore up the position, and gave him $500,000 guaranteed on a two-year deal. Figuring the 12-time Pro Bowler would add some legitimacy to a shaky secondary, it seemed like a reasonable investment.

Bailey will turn 36 in June, and it’s uncertain if anyone will give him an opportunity, considering how cornerback-needy the Saints were.

The Saints also terminated the contracts of veteran wide receiver Robert Meachem, linebacker Keyunta Dawson, kicker Shayne Graham and tackle Thomas Welch, while waiving center Matt Armstrong, Derrius Brooks, cornerback Brandon Coleman, linebacker Todd Davis, kicker Derek Dimke, cornerback Terrence Frederick, wide receiver Charles Hawkins, tight end Nic Jacobs, guard Marcel Jones, wide receiver Seantavious Jones, tackle Tavon Rooks, running back Derrick Strozier, Lawrence Virgil, cornerback Trevin Wade, safety Pierre Warren and guard Jason Weaver.

That leaves them with no kickers at the moment, but there are a number of viable veterans on the market.

no kicker is getting old. the saints need to get serious about this position. ever since heartly hurt his hip we have been playing this game. a playoff team needs a good kicker.

maybe that's why they released both of them? They're getting serious and the two we had were not the answer

Such drama...

Meachem is a bigger turn up for me. I thought he looked ok.

As for Champ, I suspect the kids drained Bailey for all he was worth, which is fair enough, but i'd have like to have seen him stick around. ..

In a way, I like that we gave up on Bailey. We gambled, lost, but aren't going to spend half a season trying to fix it.

I am not so sure about the going for two on every EP, but we'll see I guess.

Sorry, in the future when I use sarcasm I will include the massive eye roll emoticon.

but, back to the always going for 2 and fourth downs inside the 35... factoring missed FG's and projected potential for 6 instead of 3 and 2 instead 1, we would break even at only a 44% success rate, plus we'd save a roster spot
