Grading the Saints draft picks. Based on the preseason
From Rant Sports
Cooks - A I am personally looking forward to watching this kid make a cut and break some defenders ankles Jean-Baptiste - C+ Fortt - D+ One tackle and injured. Sunseri - A+ Powell -B Rooks - F, cut by the team. |

Rooks should not be an F simply because he was cut.
He was a late round project destined for the practice squad. Had we not signed him to the PS I'd agree with an F, but since we did I'd give it a D+/C-. |

I'd talk draft ad nauseum, but it's way too early to grade...
But one thing I like, even though we gave up premium to get him, is that Cooks could, and just may, start opposite Colston as a first round pick should... I liked grabbing a CB early to complement Lewis, but Jean-Baptiste was too much project for such an early pick; like our coaching staff that can develop him, but is he the goods, too early... We should have taken offensive linemen that graded there when we picked in the mid rounds; thought Fortt would have been gone by third round, but still would have rathered taken offensive linemen and another nose tackle... |

Re: Grading the Saints draft picks. Based on the preseason
Cooks is the real deal and with Brees throwing to him could have a special year. Having to cover Colston, Graham, and Cooks is not going to be easy. Plus, it will help the running game. Grade A.
Baptiste has the tools. He is raw. I personally don't think they would be worse off starting him and letting him learn on the fly rather than playing the at best inconsistent Robinson. He will absolutely be the starter next season if not before. Grade B. Fortt has the skills. He has the athletic abilities the LB's are sorely lacking. The knock against him was injuries and sadly he's injured now. It was a reach selection at a need position that so far isn't working out. But, it's early. Grade C-. Sunseri was a great pick. How he slipped this far in the draft, especially past teams needing a safety, is beyond me. He will contribute big for the Saints this year. Grade A. Powell is a gifted athlete who has a high motor and plays with a nasty streak. Injuries kept him from being a much higher pick. He won't start this season because of Jr's pass rushing abilities and Haralson's veteran presence, but will compete for a spot down the road. Grade B. Rooks was a project at best and didn't prove his slotting to be incorrect. They did think enough of him to add him to the practice squad. If he stays there this year, he still has a shot. Grade F. The players that went after Baptiste I liked were OT Moses, C Swanson, CB Aikens and DT Nix. Some players taken after Fortt were CB Desir, OLB Shembo, OG Richardson, and TE Lynch. Notable players taken after Powell were QB Mettenberger and CB Exum. After Rooks were NT McCullers, OLB Reilly, WR Janis and S Dixon. |
