Grades from Atl NO game
Overall theme, we were flat.. Slept through the game... Some surprisingly bad grades on offense as well.
Note: We were so flat that I would say this is our once terrible game/year. I say that because most of the players that played badly, played worse than their normal play by far. I am just going to focus on the ugly for now: (when you read the below, now think about how good our offense actually is when we fire on all cylinders) Receivers: Morgan - Thrown at 3 Rec 0 Meachem - Thrown at 2 Rec 0 Colston - Thrown at 8 Rec 5 Note - Drew had the second most passes dropped this week @5. Defensive Secondary: Total passes defended 2 Hawthorne - Thrown at 8 allowed 5 White - Thrown at 8 allowed 6 Lewis - Thrown at 7 allowed 6 Robinson - Thrown at 4 allowed 4 Lofton - Thrown at 5 allowed 5 Vaccaro - Thrown at 4 allowed 2 Bush/Byrd both thrown at 1 allowed 1 Missed Tackles Vaccaro 6 Hawthorne 4 Byrd 3 Jordan/Lewis/Robinson/Hicks 2 each 23 missed frikken tackles. The only recurring theme I can see here is that we are playing way too far off to stop receptions and that is giving just enough space to dodge tackles. Sorry, those players are just not that bad on their own 90% of the time. So this begs the question; if its all of them then its scheme, and if its scheme its Rob Ryan.... and what has he changed since last season? Did he get comfortable in the off season and make changes that over complicated things? Is he so concerned with our secondary that he is having all of them play 15-20 yards off which accounts for so few passes defended? You cant intercept any pass if you are not close enough to play the ball. There was a fair amount of good as well, I figured I would stick with the general climate so we can all get it out of our system then I will focus on the good. * Our pass/rush ratio was 60/40 (Atlanta was 73/36) |
Re: Grades from Atl NO game
I'm not concerned but the secondary was absolutely disgusting.
|
Re: Grades from Atl NO game
those numbers are putrid
23 misses and KV had 6? WTF? on the bright side, about 10 of the misses occurred on 2 plays |
Re: Grades from Atl NO game
We had very little pressure on the QB. Ryan was able to make those deep throws down the field.

Matt Ryan added another coat of nail polish on one play. |
Re: Grades from Atl NO game
Good write-up.
23 missed tackles is... well... awful. I think your point about the scheme really says it all. I posted about this a few times as well. Our personnel on the field has only gotten better, what changed was play off coverage vs press-man coverage last season. I dont understand the change. |
Re: Grades from Atl NO game
The pathetic secondary stats are a direct result of the worst pass rush since Spags.
Jordan, Galette and Hicks should give their game checks to an Atlanta charity. |
Re: Grades from Atl NO game
It was definitely surprising to see how well their line held up. I was disappointed to see us not run more stunt, creative blitzes, and what not. Got to give Matt Ryan some credit as well... he made a few really nice throws.

Re: Grades from Atl NO game
I know my logic is fuzzy and there are a ton of 'but's in this ..
23 missed tackles, assuming each allowed just 4 yards more. Thats nearly 100 yards of offense. I know for a fact that some of those missed tackles allowed an extra 10+ yards. Missed tackles was the culpret. Another note to ponder: Missed tackles against Atlanta = 23 Missed tackles in the 2013 regular season = 77 total Missed tackles in the 2012 regular season = 128 total Forget about pass defense. Tackle drills all week. Tackle drills on the plane to Cleveland. |

Re: Grades from Atl NO game
why is when turn overs are stressed tackling seems to go out the window?
other than that the players stunk and so did the defensive game plan. especially in the second half. |
Re: Grades from Atl NO game
Great points by everyone here. Flat, sloppy, no pass rush, receivers running free all over the field.... Wasn't this the main complaint in Dallas about Ryan's sophomore season?

Re: Grades from Atl NO game
I didn't understand all the off coverage played by both the corners and safeties. The D line just didn't show up at all and we were able to get pressure with the blitz a few times but our base D was horrible and when we went to a cover 2....OMG

Re: Grades from Atl NO game
I thought Cooks performed well. MI and PT also.

Re: Grades from Atl NO game
Since we are turning the page, there was some up side to the loss in Atlanta as well.
Offense Goodwin/Grubs/Armstead is a force in run blocking, all grading out very well. a 2013 weakness that has become a strength. Cooks - The bobble INT in the endzone was the only thing keeping him from going 8-8 100 yards and 2 TDs. Drew - His accuracy was better than it was last year, he is putting the ball where receivers can catch it in stride as well. Didnt hear 1 concern over arm strength. Graham - While 1 pass did seem to scare Graham he went 8/10 for 82 yards. Colston - Mixed bag here, 3 dropped passes and a fumble but .... 5 catches for 110 yards, 65 YAC, is solid. Defense Obviously the sacks were not there but Junior had 1 Hit and 4 Hurries with 4 tackles to shine above the rest of the Defensive front. Jordan has 3 Hurries and 1 batted pass Special Teams was pretty dam solid for the first time in a few years as far as for coverage of kicks and punts. I feel it is important to add that while we did lose, we are only 1 game behind the Conference leading Minnesota Vikings. |
Re: Grades from Atl NO game
Want to know just how good our Center-Left Tackle is?
Armstead +2 - 9th best in the league out of 63 T that played. Grubbs +3.9 3rd best in the league out of 63 that played. Goodwin.. Little trouble allowing 2 Qb Hus but +2.3 run blocking 3rd best in the league out of 32 that played. Graham 15th of 52 in Run Blocking 21 of 52 pass blocking |

Re: Grades from Atl NO game
I'd like to see that PFF chart on on defensive grades. I think its a pay per view chart though.
So far it looks like Lewis and Vaccaro actually did worse than White and Robinson, but all the hate is directed at White and Robinson. I may just have to join that site. I swore I never would, but I need to feed my addictions. |
Re: Grades from Atl NO game
PFF grades on our secondary...
Sunseri: 0.0 White: 0.0 (3rd best grade on defense) Bush: -0.1 Robinson: -1.2 Lewis: -1.2 Byrd: -2.1 Vaccaro: -5.5 OK, so ya'll wanna replace Robinson huh? |

I just can't wait for the team to get back on the field Sunday. We need to see if these guys are contenders or pretenders. Also, never judge anytime until after the 4th game has been played, then we will know what kind of season it will be. |

The truth is all the players ranked below robinson this past sunday are better then him over the course of the season. He is the weak link. |

Bush: -0.2 White: -0.4 Robinson: -1.4 Lewis: -1.4 Byrd: -1.8 Vaccaro: -2.7 Sunseri only played 2 defensive plays all game, so he doesn't count, let's be honest. Personally, I feel the lack of reps for Byrd and Robinson in TC and preseason hasn't allowed them to cohesively gel as a unit yet nor really get used to Ryan's defense. But they'll get better. We definitely need better pass rush production from the front four though. They had an off game by their standards. But I'll give some credit to Atlanta, they took a page out of our book like most offenses are doing now, chipping the DE's with backs or TE's on their way to their routes to throw things off. NFL is a copycat league and you mimic what successful teams do. So that's a credit to us We usually split the season series with Atlanta, so I'm not worried. New game this week and I expect we'll see improvements on the defensive side of the ball |
Re: Grades from Atl NO game
Come on guys... We can bicker all day about 1 player or look a level higher and realize the reality.
Very telling stat comparison: All QBs that threw for 275+ yards this week and their completion % Ryan 72.1 Luck 66 Roethelisberger 67.6 Cutler 69.4 Stafford 69.7 Flacco 56.5 Brees 69 Foles 60 Palmer 64.9 Dalton 66.7 Romo 62.2 Manning 61.1 Patrick Robinson made Matt Ryan look better than Brees and Manning? No way in hell I concede that. Rob Ryan having our secondary play too far off made Ryan's completion % look amazing. |
Re: Grades from Atl NO game
Maybe the reason Rob Ryan had Patrick Robinson playing off is because he knows Robinson falls for the double move every time and always gets left trailing the WR for a big gain?
Even a 10 yard cushion didn't help, he still got burned, we have a P-Roblem at cornerback, the warning signs have been there for years and in preseason he gets worked by a no name undrafted WR, yeah.....real starter material right there |
Re: Grades from Atl NO game
PFF has changed its numbers on missed tackles.
Vaccaro 6 Byrd 3 Robinson 2 Hicks 2 Lewis 1 Hawthorn 1 Lofton 1 Total of 16 |
