We Got Outcoached
As bad as we were outplayed, we were even more badly outcoached. The Falcons (not clowns) had us perfectly scouted and made insightful adjustments at the half to win the game. They didn't force anything and they kept their lanes and assignments.
Some of you will say, "perfectly scouted?" Yes. They had Brees running around, no receiver was left to drift unattended, they read down and distance well for tendencies, and they picked on every weakness. You can't stop Brees all the time, but you pick your spots based on tendencies, the INT was an example of Brees' inexplicable tendency to gack on the road by forcing a ball where it had no business going (I had a bad feed and could tell what play was called and who/where it was intended). They took what our defense gave, which was 10 yards off every receiver, and annihilated the defense. The "we need more turnovers" theory is BS. A stop is a turnover, just like a fumble and INT, but much more likely if you play tackle football and not flag football. Getting outscored 30-14 in the last 30:24 is inexcusable if you're really a better team. This is last season all over again. This game had better be 10,000 volts to the gonads or we are witnessing the end of the Brees Era, because he has never had the tools or team he has now. |
Re: We Got Outcoached
Well I think they overlooked the Falcons being healthy and their passing game.
I also think it is inexcusable to allow that much time left on the clock on that last drive. So getting Out coached definitely has merit. |
Re: We Got Outcoached
out coached? no adjustments to a poorly laid defense game plan worked. F

Re: We Got Outcoached
It was a bad game all the way around. It happens. We barely beat them last year without Roddy and Julio. Division games just go that way.
Yes the defense sucked but its game 1 and they have time to figure it out. If not much improves by week 4 then I will be ready for a long season. Until then I still think we are a Super Bowl team. We better come out and pummel the Brown's. Yes there were some poor coaching decisions but overall you cannot blame an offense for a loss when they put up over 30 points. |
Re: We Got Outcoached
Outplayed, not outcoached.
Our pro-bowler laden D-line couldn't generate any pass rush against back-up tackles. |
Re: We Got Outcoached
Your right about one thing, we were outcoached, but not by Atlanta. We outcoached ourselves. Why would you switch from a scheme that works to one that didn't work in 2012? Ole' Rob outsmarted himself.

Re: We Got Outcoached
this 15 -20 yard cushion was ridiculous
the linebackers were letting receivers go and Ryan was throwing right in the huge gap between them and the safeties only one play did they vary things up and blitz and that was because Prob went down Atlanta was jamming our receivers at the line clock management with 1:30 remaining? run out of bounds twice? Colston and Ingram |
Re: We Got Outcoached
up 20-10 with our offense winning the time of position in 1st half you can't blame it on adjustment but you can on poor preparation

Re: We Got Outcoached
On no planet does Smith outcoach Payton. Coaching only goes so far when you miss 7 games worth of tackles in 1 game.
|
Re: We Got Outcoached
I don't think it was as much of a coaching issue as much as it was player(s) execution (or lack there of).
The second half looked like two totally different teams. I hate it, but hats off to Atlanta. They beat our butts. |
Re: We Got Outcoached
We didn't make any adjustments at the half. I was at the game and the missed tackles were because it was one on one and in so much space...I didn't see the defense running to the ball.
Also Brees was off on his deep passes....accuracy and timing. On the play before he threw that interception, he had Ben Watson wide open on the same route. I feel that all these sub packages allowed the falcons defense to key in on routes and play calling especially after the half. |
Re: We Got Outcoached
MISS-MANAGEMENT OF THE GAME CLOCK FALLS ON THE COACH
No way should they have allowed that much time on the game clock on that last scoring TD. |
Re: We Got Outcoached
I think the players got complacent after the quick 13pts and turn over on tge fumble. The couldn't stop Cooks in tge first half and Khiry had startes to rumble late in the half. We lost because we could stop two late drives. We allowed 6pts on two 60 yard plus drives in the final minute in each half.

Re: We Got Outcoached
this had nothing to with offensive coaching at all.
It boiled down defensive coaching and adjustments adjustments on the fly. that is were we got beat. |
Re: We Got Outcoached
It does look like we were outcoached..........badly. Whether that's true or not I don't know. But it sure felt like it.

Re: We Got Outcoached
Maybe on the defense side.

Re: We Got Outcoached
Had we not turned the ball over in OT and scored a TD on that drive, would people still say we got "outcoached"??

Re: We Got Outcoached
I dunno, Halo, blowing a 20-7 lead, even if they eventually won in the end I think smart people would still be scratching their heads a bit. Maybe people need to realize that Payton is not infallible and doesn't walk on the water.
There was one of the drives in the 1st quarter that stalled out, that had Payton's classic OCD tendencies written all over it. Mark Ingram around the end, for no gain. Brees short pass to Thomas, incomplete. Then you could sense Payton get frustrated, he says $#%$# it, and rather than try a third time for the first down, he has Brees chuck the huge bomb to Morgan, broken up, incomplete. Settled for kicking the field goal, but still. The stall at the end of that drive was solely due to classic Sean Payton impatience. Makes a half-hearted half-baked attempt to run, an easily predictable pass play to Thomas, then screw it, let's chuck the bomb. DEFINITELY was something about the adjustments, too. I'm not sure what exactly the Falcons did, but in the first quarter the Saints defense WAS getting push and they were getting in Ryan's face a good bit, or at least collapsing in on him as he threw. From the second quarter on, not so much. Maybe the Falcons line were holding, I dunno. It doesn't matter what they did, or what they changed, but it worked. |
Re: We Got Outcoached
@SaintsBro - I agree with you. I actually think Saints forum fans are handling the loss pretty well.
I just can't blame the offense on this one. They put the points up. The INT in the end zone didn't hurt, but the fumble in OT lost the game. Still, they threw the points up and we had no business being in OT. What you described on offense is fixable. Defense, on the other hand, was out-coached, but outplayed mostly -- or at the very least it was not capable of making in-game adjustments. Our db's were covering in man, it was crossing pattern after crossing pattern that killed us. Safeties were not covering the middle. We could not get pressure on Ryan. Crossing patterns take time to develop. We simply could not get pressure on Matt Ryan even with a make-shift offensive line the Falcons were sporting. We finally threw a blitz at them and did get to Ryan, hurried him once and sacked him on the next play. Falcons went to quick hitch passes, but I think the defense should still have thrown bodies at Ryan. In the end, I was scratching my head thinking "where the hell are Vaccarro and our safeties?" Look, I understand we were double teaming Julio Jones, but seriously, it was like we were missing a player and only playing with 10 on defense. |
