METAIRIE, La. -- Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan pointed the blame for the New Orleans Saints' 0-2 start squarely toward himself and the defense during an interview on the WWL Radio coaches' show on Monday night.

Like Sean Payton did earlier in the day, Ryan pointed to the defense's inability to finish and to assignment errors that have plagued the team in certain situations.

"Every two-minute situation we've had this year, we've blown," Ryan said, pointing to the end of both halves in Week 1 at Atlanta and the final drive in Sunday's 26-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns. "We want to be a great defense, and great defenses always finish. And that's something you just have to point the finger at us, and we have to get corrected."

I have however seen a lot of people own their problems and continue to own and repeat for decades.

Ryan has been accused of over complicating a defense before in other places, now we need a pre-snap powerpoint presentation to communicate assignments it seems. Talking up till the snap is a sign of over complicated.

At least he mentioned the issue with them playing far off the line of scrimmage when it's unnecessary. Hopefully they fix it before Sunday. Patterson and Jennings are much better receivers than what we saw in Cleveland.

At least he owns up to it. Now if Payton would just run the ball we might have a winning season. To bad he will probably use Ingram being out as an excuse to ditch the run even when its working.

I disagree somewhat with Rob. Yes, the defense has been lousy at times, but we absolutely KILLED ourselves in Cleveland when we were in field goal range with about three minutes left and Sean Payton takes a VERY ill advised timeout when Travaris Cadet had a clear path to pick up a few yards and maybe even get the first down.

The next play, Drew got sacked and we got knocked out of field goal range and that is what let Cleveland back in.

Pathetic.

Improvements is needed both sides of the ball.


Saying that im getting seriously fed up with special teams. There has been a improvement on the defensive side of things, you dont see as many broken coverages leading to long returns but our returns and the blocking stinks

Thank you. After Cleveland, there is plenty of blame to go around. Somebody said that SP had stopped being a creative and risk taking coach -- and that is also a problem. Where have our "it's never too early to do a surprise on-side kick" days gone?

I'm no defensive expert, but it seems if wee ran the D scheme like the one last year we should at least not be on track to top our previous mark of worst defense in history. He's got people "thinking" out there and it's killing us.
