Rapists, wife beaters and child abusers.... right now .... the NFL story is not the stuff of Disney ads. It really IS sad. Is it simply because these athletes lives are lived in the stark relief of constant media scrutiny?

Yes and no... I would say that a great deal of them live their lives in stark contrast to most peoples perceptions.

We have unrealistic expectations and perceptions of our selves and everyone else. Miss America picks her nose and scratches her azz just like everyone does. Put it on the cover of People mag and you will inevitably shatter someones illusion. Some girl somewhere with low self esteem will call her a pig while holding the magazine with her left hand and scratching her own azz with the right.... some guy will cut it out and tape it to his ceiling for 'fulfillment', and yet another will throw away a scrap book containing only pictures of her. Point being that reaction will be varied and very unpredictable although the higher the pedestal the harder the fall typically.

We do it to our selves. The NFL presents a scripted personality in front of the camera and people become enamored with it to the point of veneration. I just can not relate, I looked up to my grandfathers as my role models when I was a child. I wanted to be Superman but never idolized him or thought of him as a role model.. I just thought it would be cool to fly and have x-ray vision.

Rape, assault, domestic violence...

Whats disturbing is that NFL players are involved in these incidents much much less than the general population.

Thats right, the general public (males 25-30) commits a much higher percentage of these crimes than do players in the NFL.

Thats sad.

Sad but reality... A reality that dates back to the lore of Sodom and Gomorrah. Technology and Science have evolved, human nature hasn't.

ESPN radio has been awful throughout. They've spent their entire programs focusing on the few idiots and not the games. They ARE TMZ. They're demonizing the NFL and making the players sound like thugs, brutes, and morons.

Media has a huge role in this mess.
