Saints’ Robinson owns up to mistakes

Talk is cheap

METAIRIE, La. – Patrick Robinson said being pulled from the starting lineup last week is a big thing. But the New Orleans Saints cornerback said there’s only one way to respond to it.

“That’s something big, but you still gotta deal with it, no matter if it’s hard to deal with or not,” Robinson said. “You know, you mess up, you gotta own up to it. And try to get better from there.”

Saints cornerback Patrick Robinson has had plenty of misses in the first two weeks of the season. The Saints haven’t given any indication yet this week if they plan to make a permanent change at the No. 2 cornerback job.

Robinson was replaced in the Saints’ base defense by cornerback Corey White last week at Cleveland after a handful of early miscues. Robinson came back onto the field in nickel packages and had a couple more highs and lows in the 26-24 loss to the Browns.

The most costly error was Robinson’s 19-yard pass interference penalty on a third-down play in the first quarter when he didn’t turn back to locate the ball in the air. Also in the first quarter, Robinson also allowed a short touchdown pass and was penalized for jumping offsides on a field goal attempt (though safety Kenny Vaccaro actually jumped first).

Late in the game, Robinson was also penalized for defensive holding, which was declined during the Browns’ final 28-yard pass play that was loaded with defensive breakdowns.

Robinson echoed the thoughts of teammates and coaches throughout the week that all of those things are big issues – but small details that can be corrected.

“As far as me not playing, that’s a lot of motivation for me, pretty much. You know, to fine-tune my small details, like my eyes. And instead of turning to the receiver, turn back to the quarterback and look up, and not look back,” Robinson said. “Small things like that, you know, that make a big difference if I make the play or if it’s pass interference.”

Robinson said the message sent to the entire team this week has been, “We’ve just gotta play fast and smart.”

“You know, we made some dumb mistakes that cost us games, plain and simple,” said Robinson, who also was beaten on two mid-range passes in a Week 1 overtime loss at Atlanta. “We’ve gotta play smart, and we’ve gotta play faster than we are. … It’s as simple as that, to be honest.”

Playing tight man-to-man would be a nice start...

Agreed.

How are you supposed to "play fast" when you're backing off the line at the snap? The defensive scheme this year is retarded, I feel like I'm on crazy pills.

Learn from your mistake.

Idk. He's playing like he's afraid to get beat deep. If this defense doesn't show up against the lowly Vikes, I don't know what's gonna happen to my Saints hat. It took a brutal beating in week 1 and 2. Its got teeth marks on the bill and was thrown all over the house.

I hate that we are talking about this. I'd rather be talking about a 2-0 start instead of 0-2.

Starting 2 - 0 and going 2 - 2, people would freak.
But we're 0 - 2 and if we go to 2 - 2, there will be relief.

C'mon, you need to recognize that this year's Vikes are far removed from the miserable bunch they were these past couple of years. They outplayed the Pats this past Sunday in a number of ways, but made a lot of dumb mistakes that ultimately destroyed their game-plan. The AP situation clearly affected the players, but I'm sure they'll be more focused this Sunday.

Ok. But they're still the Matt Cassel led Vikes with no AP.

The have to press and knock the WR's timing off. So far, the QB's have set and threw to open recievers. Any NFL QB can do that.

What is it about them that gives the impression they'll be more focused this week? I think, if anything, they'll be less focused. Last week, they were coming of a win, and the AP thing was kind of new. Now they're coming off a loss, which will shake what little confidence that crappy team might have had, and have had all week to answer Peterson questions. AND we're the most dominate team in the history of football at home. A 21 point win would have to be considered a close game given our home dominance.

I think it is definitely fair to expect a blowout and be disappointed by anything less, given all those circumstances. Anything is possible of course, and we might find that this year we're just as bad at home as we've been on the road. But if we're to have any hope in this team making a turnaround, you have to look for a blowout this week or our chances are pretty dead.

Doesn't matter who the Vikings have not playing if we don't execute

Brown's were missing their 3 best players and still beat us.

Well, as someone who has watched all of the Vikes' games this past decade including preseasons - I see a definite change for the better. That being said, I wouldn't bet against the Saints at their home.

Yeah, but we were all expecting 4-0.

The problem with Robinson is that when he is playing cornerback, he can't find the ball or the man... He's not even close.

Keep something in mind, try not to let an 0-2 stat change your perception of the team and its ability. Last season when we were 2-0, the sky was still falling for some.

IIRC my post game thread celebrating 2-0 in 2013 was met with some.. shall we say, a few didn't share in my optimism. :bng:

I never played college ball, but when I was in high school we didn't have the option to line up wherever we wanted. If we were playing off too much, the coach told us to move our asses up and that's where we played. It can't be possible that the coaches are telling him to line up wherever he wants? Has anyone asked this question to Robinson or the coaches?

To me, a simple rule might be: "If the offense has X yards to go for a first down, you should be playing no more than X-1 yards off the LOS".

I admit I'm not a defensive mastermind but that seems like a good start.
