METAIRIE, La. – The answer to the New Orleans Saints' defensive woes was simple:

Simplify things.

After struggling with assignment and communication breakdowns during their first two games, the Saints cut out all of their on-field checks and adjustments – especially since they were playing at home with the crowd noise at a fever pitch. The result was a much cleaner, more efficient performance in Sunday’s 20-9 victory over the Minnesota Vikings.

Well after the Browns game Payton did say (I'm almost quoting verbatim but too lazy to look it up) "I'm not usually in the room with those defensive meetings, I'm usually over with the offense" and I'm almost certain that changed and he said he would specifically go over the defensive film with Ryan, and he is spending more time now during the week with the defense. So we don't know exactly but I kinda think that DID sorta happen, after that outburst on the sidelines against the Browns.

I understand turnovers are important but playing solid defense is first and foremost. Turnovers will come when our defense feels comfortable enough to execute without hesitation. Sometimes you just have to let the players play.

I think someone sad in chat this week that it looked like the defense was reacting too slow, if they're having to think too much I don't know that is good. Didn't they complain about that with Spags too?

Drafting a LB that can cover a tight end would be a start. Maybe we can convince some 3rd rate basketball player who'll never make a dime shooting hoops to be the designated TE mauler. Big, fast, good hands, one assignment, and won't get called for a foul for a hip check. Beats having one of our resident midgets covering the new breed of TE's.
