"On this date" in New Orleans Saints history - Sept. 26 - a spotlight on the Saints for your day:

1971--Saints lose at Tulane Stadium, 38-20 to San Francisco, which included 49ers CB Bruce Taylor's 58-yard blocked field goal return for a touchdown. Saints kicker Skip Butler is cut after the game, during which the Saints reach the 1,000-point mark in their regular season history.

1976--Hank Stram gets his first victory as Saints head coach by ironically defeating his former team, 27-17 at the Chiefs. The Saints have their first dual 100-yard rushers in a game (RB Chuck Muncie 126, Tony Galbreath 146) and a total of 299 rushing yards.

1993--Saints defeat the 49ers, 16-13, in the Superdome. Morten Andersen kicked his third field goal to win the game, a 49-yarder with two seconds left. Andersen is later named NFC special teams player of the week & LB Vaughan Johnson is named Defensive Player of the Week with 22 tackles plus a sack and a forced fumble.

2004--Saints' John Carney is named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for kicking the tying 38-yard field goal and winning 31-yard field goal in overtime at St. Louis, two of his five kicks in their 28-25 win.

2010--Saints lose in overtime to Atlanta, 27-24, in the Superdome. With 3:32 left in regulation, the Saints take over on downs and drive from their 37-yard line to the Atlanta 15-yard line, and Garrett Hartley makes a 32-yard field goal with six seconds to go, leaving the score tied at 24. In overtime, the Saints force a Falcons punt and then drive to the Atlanta 11-yard line, but Hartley misses a 29-yarder, allowing the Falcons to eventually win on a 46-yard Matt Bryant field goal. The Saints called a timeout before that snap; if they hadn't, then Chris Reis would have blocked the kick.
