We got fat and sassy this offseason
It's that simple. Other teams worked. We just rested on our laurels, thinking that last year would automatically carry over to this year. We didn't put in the work in the offseason and that's showing through on the field.
I attribute that to a mostly young team; young players with newfound success who didn't know how to handle it. So obvious on the defensive line when you look at Jordan, Galette and Hicks, guys who tore it up last year but can't even sniff the QB now. I don't think the coaches are immune to it, either. Rob Ryan got his first real taste of success in a long time and started reading all the press clippings about what a great genius and guru he is, and forgot the simple, fundamental things that made his defense good. I think the team has probably by now taken a good long look in the mirror, and now they understand that complacency has been a shotgun in the mouth to the season. This is where the truly great organizations recover. The Patriots are one of those teams that can look terrible and you wonder if they're ever going to win a game, then next thing you know they have won 7-8 games in a row and lead the division. We know the Saints can do the same thing, we saw them do it in 2011. I think it will definitely be interesting down the stretch. This team can still make the playoffs. Assume we win all 8 games at home; that means if we can win 2 road games we'll at least be in the picture for a wildcard spot. And as crappy as the NFCS looks this year, we might even have a shot at that. No time to waste though. This team needs to win next week, straighten things out during the bye week and then start tearing it up. I have faith it can happen, 100%. |
Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
I agree but we MUST figure out this Cornerback issue
|
Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
White is awful, looks lost in coverage. I dunno if Ryan is trying to over complicate sh*t, but he's deviated from whatever he was doing last year. Need to get back to the basics and away from whatever the f*ck this is.

Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
I also want to say thank you making a completely rational, positive thread. I was worried about what I would find on here tonight.

Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
^Why scapegoat White? He didn't look any worse than anybody else. Keenan gave up a TD, Vacarro suddenly can't cover anybody. Byrd lines up 45 yards from the line of scrimmage, no wonder he's never involved. We can't bring down Murray with six guys on top of him because they're too worried about stripping the ball instead of making a tackle. And that's just the defense. Corey White is the least of our problems right now, seriously.
We also just happened to play a team with a really, really damn good offense tonight. Romo gets a lot of crap because of his turnovers, but when he's hot, he's just as good as Brees. We were going to have to match that team score for score, instead we dropped passes and played soft. Again though it's still early. We could easily be 3-3 after the next two games which are both very winnable. |

[QUOTE=Jack Vegas;614795]^Why scapegoat White? He didn't look any worse than anybody else. Keenan gave up a TD, Vacarro suddenly can't cover anybody[/] Aside from the TD, Lewis played half decent. White routinely bailed on coverage and b-lined it towards the endzone. That reeks of someone who has no idea what they're doing. Manning vaccaro up on Witten was silly, I have no idea where that idea came from but that experiment was a failure, Witten is way too big to get jammed and KV isn't quick enough to recover. We need a true SAM linebacker, PH is good playing the run but about as bad as Lofton and Hawthorne in coverage.

Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
Its too late in the night to get involved in a discussion about zone defense and combo coverage. I will just say that he is not "bailing." Say what you want about White, but he does not play scared. This is more about overcomplicated defense than anything else.

Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
I'm not blaming White for our defensive woes, no one is playing well, but White was very bad tonight. One thing that needs to come together is the d-line. They're way too talented to be playing this poorly and that's really hurting our DBs. I think the 2013 line will show up soon, but one sack tonight was disappointing.
As for the rest, I agree. The cowboys have huge amounts of talent on offense and with the way that oline is playing it's no surprise that Romo is lighting it up. It's too bad they showed up for the whole game and we didn't, but I agree that we can build off a few home games and hit a win streak. |
Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
This team looks scared and out of place often. Watch the bad angle Byrd takes on the first Murray TD, then another play where it should have been a tackle for loss instead it`s a 25 yard gain. I hardly see any really tackling, everybody seems so focused on stripping the ball. A stop on third down IS a turnover!!!
Last season the defense got worse as the season went on. We beat up some rookie QB at home, like the Bills game, but other teams also had a field day against us. The fire on the Dline is non existing, that was there last season. Last year they covered up some holes on the secondary, this year without any real pressure the secondary looks completely lost. As for the offense: 2 drops on the first drive, that should have gone for a combined 40 yards. Jimmy Graham that looks lost on the field and the fumble just made his performance worse. Brees seems to have lost his throwing power, don`t get me wrong he made some awsome throws - f.e. Kenny Stills 46 yarder - but the short bullets I have not seen this year. |
Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
Reading press clipping and eating boudain is the best way to get mentality ready for the season baby.
The entire team does not have it's head screwed on right. some more than others but as a unit they are totally dysfunctional and running on 1 out 8 cylinders. there is no fire. no desire. |
Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
^ I agree with the mental angle. Sean Payton just looked tired and lost & disgusted. He didn't seem angry -- contrast that with Mike Tomlin's post game presser. He was pissed. SP didn't say we will get this ship righted. It is concerning. They aren't playing like a "team".

Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
Never thought I would be saying this but it seems like Payton and Ryan have run out of ideas in this game tonight!!!
Hope they can get things back on track for the rest of the season!!! GEAUX SAINTS!!!! |
Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
I feel for the rookies and younger players because the veterans are really making a bad example
Junior - got paid, doesn't care anymore Byrd - 56 mil for 1 forced fumble in week 1 Jimmy - catches what passes he wants and drops the ones he has to make an effort for Brees - throwing into triple coverage like its a great idea Lofton - scott shanle was faster than him Kenny vaccaro - man did that pick look great last year, he's terrible this year |
Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
Fat, lazy, sassy, complacent, lost, lack of desire, lack of fire are all good descriptions for this team. I don't think we are even close to turning it around either. We have issues all over the roster of mediocre players playing poor and our high priced stars playing medicore. Where did it really start to unravel? I thought the cushy Greenbrier TC is where it started but looking deeper I think it goes back earlier. I am not sure if you can draw a distinct line but Drews $100M, bounty gate suspensions/draft pick losses, loss of key vets that now look great on other teams, aging roster at key spots are all places to look. Coaching doesn't get a pass either. ST's (other than Punter) continue to be pitiful. Defense is yet again an issue. Poor tacking, out of position, no turnovers, no pass rush. Our once feared Offense is sputtering with issues at play calling, execution and just a look of staleness. We may be witnessing the beginning of the end of the Brees era if not the Brees and Payton era when we look back to this time down the road. As fans, we are abit spoiled perhaps. I know I am but as a fan I am afforded that luxury. At least I hope I am. At least we have those memories because I am afraid that is all we will have for some time as this fix will not be overnight.

Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
I'll admit that Greenbriar Resort for training camp sounded cushy to me too.
Regardless the level of talent should overcome the first two losses. Maybe we need to go back there for the bye week and bury the memories |
Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
The Greenbriar Resort was supposed to be a refreshing change of pace. Cooler temperatures should've turned into longer, more effective practices....in theory anyways. I can't really point the finger to anyone or anything in particular. I do know that, for some reason, the fire on both sides is not there. Say what you want about our corners, and trust me, I know they're not great, but our defensive woes point to D line and coaching. Offensively, we've lost that electric, well executed play making. Although we have a mediocre O line, we have all the tools to be a really good offense. Maybe Sean has lost the team for whatever reason. All I can say is I look at it like this.... This is not the first time Sean has had a losing team. I have faith that we will rebound. We may have to wait until next year. I usually wait till at least half the season to make an assessment on a team, but I don't have much optimism with this team and that's OK. I know there are some seasons where the fortune isn't there for some teams. I will, however ,continue to watch every game faithfully as I always have and hope for the best. If anything,we'll just have a great spot in the draft next year!

Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
This offseason I was reading how Arizona players are sweating (big temperatures) and having difficult time in training camp. On the other side we were having a great time in Greenbriar. They are 3:0 we are 1:3.

Jenkins and Harper looked better than Byrd and Vaccaro do now. Lewis is also getting toasted as well. |
Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
I didn't think Lewis did that bad overall against Bryant. The extreme lack of pressure is just letting everyone we play pick us apart at will. Hell there were a few times we couldn't even get the right amount of players on the field defensively.

Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
And don't forget, the one practice they had at Greenbriar that was IN THE RAIN, they looked absolutely terrible according to everyone who saw it, including Payton.
New Orleans Saints trudge through rainy, sloppy practice on Monday afternoon | NOLA.com Remember this article, ^^^^^^^ when they now have to go on the road to win someplace like Tampa or Carolina or Philly or Seattle, and it's do-or-die because of the "easy" games they lost early in the season. They couldn't even score on the Cowboys D, with the roof on and climate control and all the comfy amenities. Does anybody really believe that this offense can perform better than they did last night, if it were in a rainstorm or sleet? |
Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
Once again, I'm not scapegoating White, I didn't say he was the reason that the passing D was awful, but White has been inconsistent. Re-watching film, I think some of it might be the scheme, he's still playing way too deep. That still doesn't explain why he was routinely out of position, chasing the rec last night. Watch the game highlights on NFL.com and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. With 9:40 left in the third the Cowboys run play action, White bites hard and doesn't even bother looking for Williams (looks like they're in man coverage too). He just whips his head around and b-lines it towards the endzone, Byrd comes down and makes the tackle. Even on Williams' first td he bit on a double move, missed his jam and gave up the inside for an easy TD. Byrd, who was lined up on the other side, comes across and misses the break up/lays Williams out.

Well Lewis gave up that TD late when fatigue likely set in, other than that holding Dez to 44 yards is pretty good. |

Re: We got fat and sassy this offseason
Sean Payton is the head coach... It all falls on him and his Staff... Prob isn't the problem.... C.White isn't the problem... Our game plans both offense and defense have sucked... Payton needs to get his coaches together and they need to figure out something... because if something isn't changed its going to be a long season.....
