Rams part ways with Ray Ray Armstrong after latest penalty on special teams

Worth a try out?

As a rookie in 2013, Rams linebacker Ray Ray Armstrong committed nine penalties on special teams but kept his job in St. Louis into this season.

He doesn’t have it any longer. Rams coach Jeff Fisher announced Monday that Armstrong was released after Sunday’s game, which saw him pick up an unnecessary roughness flag for shoving Eagles punt returner Darren Sproles at the end of a return in last Sunday’s 34-28 loss. While Fisher said that the penalty wasn’t the only reason for Armstrong’s departure, he had expressed displeasure with stupid special teams penalties on Sunday and the move should serve as notice to others even if Armstrong wasn’t a “scapegoat.”

“Again, it’s the body of work,” Fisher said, via the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “It had been addressed with him numerous times, and that penalty ultimately becomes my fault because when a guy’s making mistakes over and over, and he’s allowed to play, it becomes my fault. So we’re gonna get someone else in there that understands things a little differently. And it’s not the [result of the] game. This was gonna happen win or lose. This is not a scapegoat. You guys know me, I’m not about that. But we need to make a change and go a different direction.”

Fisher said that the team has been called for 16 pre-snap and post-play penalties, which are the kinds of things that can come back to haunt a team that’s lost their last two games by a total of nine points. And also the kinds of things that can help put you out of work.

We tried out LB Paul Hazel today as well; 6'5" 252 lbs. 4.53 40 time...

Is this bottom of the barrel.

It just confounds me why they can't sign a stud pro-bowl LB off the street in week 6.

Damn our front office is weak.

No, but it is in that direction...

Although I got the sarcasm I don't think that's what any of us are asking for at this point. I think most of us would settle for a linebacker that could at least give chase 2 yards beyond the line of scrimmage. If you look at most of the linebackers on our team they are either designed to stop the run or rush the qb. I can't name one that doesn't look silly in coverage except for maybe hawthorne and he's never healthy. I don't even need them to be great in coverage. I just need them to run well enough to where they don't look out of breath chasing slow developing crossing routes across the middle.

Yes, but unfortunately we aren't gonna find one sitting on his couch in week 6.

I hope for 2 things...
1-I hope the 2015 draft is heavy at LB
2-We decide to draft one in round 1 and/or 2

I don't mean to be mean but...

Ray Ray Armstrong is dumber than a bag of rocks. I wouldn't be surprised if he had trouble reading a Dr. Suess book or put together a few coherent sentences.

The Rams shouldn't have been all that surprised with the outcome. His past track record speaks volumes.

PASS.

I still think Erin Henderson would be worth trying out.
Had drink issues but spent a month in rehab

First of all, nobody has any expectations of finding a difference maker at this time of year, so I don't know who you're talking to. But there are sometimes players who can fit a role on your team that are out there.

You might have a guy with solid physical tools who got released because he didn't fit his team's scheme. And maybe you can find a guy like that who can come in and provide a spark in certain situations. I'm not saying that guy is even out there, but you never know. I definitely don't want Armstrong though. He got released because he's got as much discipline as a stray cat.

Maybe Loomis is too busy with the Pelicans to focus on the Saints. I think he is spread too thin.

Exactly. There could be a team who has too many players at the position or a guy that just needs to get refocused (ex. rolando mcclain for the cowboys). We're not looking for a jack linebacker right now. That's what free agency and the draft are for. However, finding a speed backer with average cover skills isn't impossible. We just have to be committed to looking. And with no team to prep for this week there should be some available time to take a look at guys.

If someone told you that you had 3 seconds to name the team that was the best fit for "Ray Ray", who would you say?

Raiders Claim LB Ray-Ray Armstrong

yep, that would have been my guess too

As I finished the 1st sentence I thought Raiders at the same instant I read the 2nd sentence.

LOL!!!

You've been around long enough to know that 9 out of 10 times that we look at a bottom roster guy several knuckleheads start bashing his skills and bashing the front office because the player apparently isn't capable of replacing some struggling or mediocre starter.

Maybe not on this site so much, but I know you've seen it, and have probably seen it a lot.

I was poking fun at those that seem to expect that we'll sign a 27 year old Ray Lewis off the street during the season to shore up our defense.
