Drew Brees Is Not Playing Like Drew Brees
1 Attachment(s)
Drew Brees is not supposed to struggle... at least not like this. More than a quarter of the way through the season, the 35-year-old quarterback of the 2-3 New Orleans Saints ranks 14th in Total Quarterback Rating (QBR), a highly functional, 100-point metric that measures pretty much everything important about the position. Brees' current QBR is a measly 64.2, the lowest ranking of his 14-year career.
Despite throwing for 371 yards and two touchdowns during Sunday's win over Tampa Bay, Brees also tossed three interceptions (albeit one served as a punt), giving him six total on the year. "First of all, it shouldn't happen," Brees said bluntly of the interceptions after Sunday's win. Drew Brees Is Not Playing Like Drew Brees |
Re: Drew Brees Is Not Playing Like Drew Brees
Another article that doesn't quite see the big picture.
Yes, he's made some mistakes but he's still playing like a top 10 QB. Our defense sucks so bad I think he feels forced to make things happen, hence the ridiculously dumbass throws this year. |
Re: Drew Brees Is Not Playing Like Drew Brees
agree... its not the big picture.
A couple of bone headed mistakes outside of that he's been good. O line needs some help but our struggles is mostly D. |

I know I'm just a retard college professor, so it pains me to point out that the number 14 is not less than 10, and, "dumbass" is a Brooksian term. Please try to make a more coherent argument for why we should tolerate bad from our most expensive player other than, "he was once good a few years ago," and "he was at his best this weekend when he handed the ball to PT/KR." :jester: |

And as a college professor you should realize that being officially ranked at 14 isn't "bad", in fact its in the top 50 percentile. But perhaps as a College professor you didn't realize there are 32 teams. I'm a lowly Engineering grad but I can still calculate that 14 out of approximately 32 is better than bad. And as a College professor you should also know that he wasn't "at his best" when he handed the ball off. His passing set up the tying and winning scores. And as far as "dumbass" being a Brooksian term, well I have no f'ing idea what the hell that means, but I'm just a left brain Engineer.:p Oh and as a College professor I'm quite sure you're familiar with the term... "SCHOOLED!!!":p |
Re: Drew Brees Is Not Playing Like Drew Brees
Drew has played at such a high level and for so long we expect him to not struggle or quickly move on from struggling. When he presses bad stuff happens. I first recall seeing it in 2007 after we opened up so bad after getting to the title game the previous/first year. This year seems similiar to that year. What is the fix? Better protection and less drops would be a good start. Not throwing 57 times a game would be a good step. Throwing the ball away when it isn't there would be a good step. I have faith in him and the team to get it fixed and get back to making the elite decisions we are used to seeing.

Re: Drew Brees Is Not Playing Like Drew Brees
I do agree he should play like the top three QB he is paid as. I also know its a funk that he will be out of after the bye week. Its hard to put it all on the defense but they definitely are the biggest disappointment. We will go on at least a four game win streak after the bye and THE BEST QB IN FOOTBALL will reclaim his throne and mark the words of a high school drop out.

Pinning the defense down in their own territory early, often with unbelievably, stupid f***ing interceptions and keeping them on the field contributed to them wearing in the second half... Glennon is no slouch either - we beat a young, hungry team yesterday... just saying...:bng: |

Re: Drew Brees Is Not Playing Like Drew Brees
Yes, I wish Brees was playing like his old 2009 self. May, or may not happen again. Only time will tell.
What is a fact is: 1-Brees does not have time in the pocket. This has resulted in him making some poor decisions. He needs to throw the ball away rather than forcing a throw into coverage. 2-Receivers are not getting separation. Hill seems to be the only receiver who can play catch and run. All others get almost zero yards after the catch. 3-Our receivers have more drops in the last five games than they usually have in a season. |
Re: Drew Brees Is Not Playing Like Drew Brees
He made the same dumbass throws in 2012 when Spags was our defensive coordinator and we were the worst D in history.
I do think he tries to do to much and tries to take on all the responsibility. I think he feels like he HAS to get it done because he isn't getting help from the D. I do think something is wrong though. I don't know if its age, but I think that oblique may still be giving him trouble. I also think our offensive line has been getting worse and worse since Kromer left and we failed to beef it up via draft or FA. |
Re: Drew Brees Is Not Playing Like Drew Brees
Brees has always been looked at as the model of consistency, but that is not even close to being true.
He has a ton of career pick sixes, and his TD-Int ratio is much lower than Rodgers, Brady & Manning. With Drew you get a ton of offense, and 3-4 forced throws a game. Those forces have really hurt this year. |

The year we get the run game together Drew seems to struggle. TF is up with that

Re: Drew Brees Is Not Playing Like Drew Brees
Look, if Drew has no pressure and the receivers create separation -- that is a completed pass. This we know. ( Drew Bress <> Christian Ponder ) There is a positive correlation between pressure on the QB and poor pass completion percentage. IMO, the only thing the Drew Brees deserves criticism for is poor judgement when throwing under pressure while poorly anticipating opposing coverages. When he fails to perform in these areas he is not playing like the elite quarterback that we know he can be.
IMO the "in decline" comments are way too early in this balls up f-up of a season to merit much weight. All things influence all things. Just as stellar play of elite QBs can make receivers better -- poor play of receivers can make an elite QB look shi**y. So, can lack of a run game or lack of a defense. Seems like some on this board need a goat and Drew Brees is wearing that hat today. I imagine he'll be wearing the crown again shortly. I just want to remind you how rare perfection is, in a single NFL game, and in a single NFL season. If we start winning, we'll hear the love songs again ( except from Dude ). |
Re: Drew Brees Is Not Playing Like Drew Brees
We were leading 13-3 when he threw two consecutive interceptions, both resulting in TD's
As bad as the defense has been, there was no need for him to force passes in that situation, he completely gave the bucs the momentum and it could have dropped us to 1-4 |

Drew made some REAL BAD mistakes in this game, but come on, without him on the field we are 0-5. |

Re: Drew Brees Is Not Playing Like Drew Brees
I just want to see one rainbow to Cooks, deep over the middle, hitting him in stride at the 10-15 yard line...too much to ask?

In all honesty, I've thought he's played rather well save a few consecutive quarters in TB game where he did some really dumb things. Mountains out of molehills.

Re: Drew Brees Is Not Playing Like Drew Brees
it is tough times that reveal character.
that is true for both the NFL folks and the fans. many of you might consider moving to atlanta or dallas. you'll fit right in with their fan base. i find it revealing how many fair weather fans are "know it alls" yet they've never played a single down in an NFL game or coached for even one play. fantasy football has more than one meaning. many of you are deluded and disloyal. i'll leave it to you to determine where the loyalty line in the sand resides... any NFL team can beat any other NFL team on any given sunday. try to remember that, guppies. |

I've been saying Drew's declining for a long time! It's time to start looking for his replacement. Maybe Coach 'P' should set him before he ruins the rest of the season! No one man is bigger than the team!

I'd like to see Drew hit Cooks perfectly in stride at least once this season

I'm not ready to replace Drew. He still has it but doesn't know where he put it.

Re: Drew Brees Is Not Playing Like Drew Brees
I want to see Brees hit Cook, Stills, Meachum, Colston 40 yards down the field and they all catch it in the back of the end-zone. And, I want to see this 4x in every game.

Re: Drew Brees Is Not Playing Like Drew Brees
NFL.com posted the biggest 10 disappointments of the season.
Every week, Chris Wesseling will roll out the power rankings for one specific NFL position. So far, we have covered running backs, safeties, red-zone threats, throwing arms and quarter-pole surprises. This week, we turn our attention to the top 10 disappointments at the quarter-season mark. On to the rankings: 1. New Orleans Saints: I thought the Saints would be Super Bowl contenders on the strength of an explosive offense and a defense that added Pro Bowl safety Jairus Byrd after ranking No. 4 in the NFL last season. Instead, the offense has lacked big plays as Drew Brees has struggled to stretch the field. NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell has posited that Byrd was playing as poorly as any safety in the league before he was lost for the season with a torn meniscus. Breakout candidate Kenny Vaccaro is ranked dead last among 78 safeties graded by Pro Football Focus. The Saints are talented enough to remain the favorites in the NFC South, but they need to snap out of their early-season malaise |
