Saints' Khiry Robinson on unlikely NFL success: 'It still feels like a dream'

METAIRIE, La. -- Khiry Robinson had some funny responses to dealing with the increasing fame and attention he’s been getting in his second year as a running back for the New Orleans Saints.

“Man, it still feels like a dream sometimes. That’s why I’m always running from cameras. I’m not used to it yet. I still feel like I’m just playing football,” Robinson said while surrounded by a group of reporters Monday morning.

And when asked how many texts and phone calls he received after his standout performance and game-winning touchdown run against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week, Robinson said, “It was like 50, 60 messages, it was crazy. New friends. New cousins. … I can’t complain, though. It’s all love from everybody, so I respect that.”

Robinson’s humble beginnings as an undrafted rookie from West Texas A&M have been well chronicled. He barely cracked the Saints’ roster last year after being invited for a three-day tryout during rookie minicamp.

Before that, Robinson also took a road less traveled through Mesabi Range Community College in northern Minnesota and the higher profile Blinn Junior College in Texas. The Texas native said he had been recruited by some bigger schools like Baylor and Texas Tech. But he said he had been mostly a backup in high school and had to take the alternate route in part due to academics.

At Blinn, Robinson got to team with Cam Newton, but he also suffered a torn ACL and moved to safety for a year. Robinson admitted that was the one time he started to doubt that his NFL dreams might ever become reality.

The Times-Picayune’s Evan Woodbery took a more detailed look at Robinson’s college path, speaking with his Mesabi Range coach and breaking down some of his statistics.

“I was like, ‘Damn, I’m not a running back, and I always had a dream of playing running back,” Robinson said. “So after that, I kind of thought about it in a spiritual way. You’ve just got to keep faith and believe in what you’re going to do and believe in who’s in control. At the end of the day, that’s what I did, and I ended up here.”

As soon as feel like you have arrived you begin to back slide. Always work hard to hone your craft. It keeps you humble that way.
