Erik "Bigfoot" Lorig is BACK

There's been a sighting in New Orleans!! No, it's not of the infamous, 8 foot manimal who's eluded camera-toting campers for decades. It's actually one of the most intriguing free agent "finds" of the Saints off-season - Erik Lorig.

Although he hasn't practiced since early training camp, I can't help but to be (as with Bigfoot) drawn to thinking about what he looks like up close. Does he speak? Can he understand commands? Is he here to hurt us?

I don't know! And one has to wonder; during all that time trapped in a training room - does he still have the ability to mesh with other humans?

Hopefully we'll see Sunday.

Didn't he practice the week before the Buccaneers game too?

We'll need another blocker for that nasty Detroit D line!

Might be great for the running game if both Lorig and Ingram could return...

Great news.

If I am being completely honest though, I'm not sure I would take Austin Johnson out of the starting lineup. I think he's been really great so far.

Exactly, we have the 6th best rushing game with Austin as our FB, why change that if it's working?

Don't forget, Lorig has the size to line up at TE. We'll need the help if he's up to blocking

We go 4 and 5 wide.

Why not go 4 and 5 backs?

Seriously. Why not?

It'd sure fool 'em...maybe...

There's still room to improve... they could have the #1 rushing offense.

Johnson has been good for the Saints, but the way Lorig opened up lanes for the Bucs' run game - I definitely want to see him do that for the Saints' RBs.

49ers do it all the time, fullback blocking for Gore; motion a TE in the backfield pre-snap... Another blocker can't hurt, or you can keep one in the backfield and set-up a mean play-action

And what if we put him in and our running game faulters?

What a player has done in previous season bears no ground this season

Jairus Byrd had 22 turnovers through 4 seasons for the bills, he did absolutely squat here

well what if we put him and our run game soars in yardage gained? Referring to Byrd's faults has nothing to do with Lorig

Great idea. The option of a power running game and a very nice short passing out of the same formations and same personnel groupings. Mismatches everywhere with Drew pulling the trigger.

I mean, seriously, we roll that package out there and just exactly what will DET roll out on defense to match it? Mismatches everywhere. Brilliant. I like it.

I was thinking more of a TE role. Think outside the box fellas

You mean "square peg in a round hole" type of thing that has worked wonders for the Saints in the past?! :-)

Lorig played TE for two years at Stanford.

Quote:

In his first two years at Stanford, Lorig played tight end and wore number 80. In his freshman campaign, Lorig played in all 12 games where he contributed on special teams and served as the offense's blocking TE, often lining up in the backfield as an H-back/Fullback.
Round peg, meet round hole. You two should get along just fine, I'm headed back to the nachos.

My last comment was more in jest... merely a comment on the whole idea of "thinking outside the box."

...oh, and I do remember SP talking about Lorig's pass catching ability as being one of the things why they targeted him way back in the offseason.

I think all we have left is "waaaay outside the box"!

We paid him well to come here and block. If he's up to it let him earn his pay check.

If he can improve our O I'm all for it, if he don't we know what Johnson can do. The only bright spot that I have seen is in running the ball.
