New Orleans Saints sign guard Eric Olsen following injury to center Jonathan Goodwin
 

The New Orleans Saints have signed guard Eric Olsen to their active roster, two days after center Jonathan Goodwin was carted off with a leg injury while playing the Detroit Lions.

Goodwin's specific injury and timetable to return is unknown.

Goodwin, 35, has had a difficult season with injuries this year. He was also carted off with an ankle sprain against the Minnesota Vikings.

The Saints also signed tackle DeMarcus Love to the practice squad and terminated the contract of practice squad center Alex Parsons.

Olsen, a 2010 sixth round draft pick for the Denver Broncos, was signed to the Saints' active roster in the 2011 postseason. He appeared in all 16 games for the Saints in 2012 but was placed on injured reserve after spraining his foot in training camp last summer.

Olsen can play both guard and center, but was essentially beat out by another reserve guard/center Tim Lelito last summer. Lelito, a undrafted rookie free agent last year, started two games in place of injured Jahri Evans.

Lelito will be the immediate fill in for Goodwin.

The Saints eventually reached an injury settlement and waived him last September.

"Chip on my shoulder just got a little bit bigger...," he tweeted the day of his release.

However, the bridge between Olsen and the Saints had apparently not been burned. Olsen worked out for New Orleans in September, but wasn't signed at the time.

Love, who played guard in college but has been primarily at tackle in the NFL, has spent time with the Vikings, Jaguars and Giants.

It's not like we don't have practiced depth on the o-line. Olsen knows this team and our offense.
