PFT Live: Can Saints offense overcome shaky defense?

I haven't watched this yet

Jeff Duncan from New Orleans Times-Picayune joins PFT Live to urge Saints fans to temper their anger at the team’s 2-4 start because of their narrow margin of defeat and deciphers if Drew Brees and the offense can carry the defense that has looked shaky at times the rest of the way.

2008-2012 Drew Brees could carry any defense

In 2008, 2011 and 2012 the offense carried the team

Drew is making bad decisions now though

So Drew is the reason we are 2-4?

Drew is not the reason we are 2-4 but he is not without blame, 7 picks through 6 weeks is a lot by anyones standards .

Gotta love the melodramatic.

I am so spittin' mad the Saints are 2-4 that I cannot function properly in society. OK, so I can't function properly in society anyhow, but it ain't because the Saints are 2-4.

Drew will be fine as long as there's no more major flare-ups with the oblique. And remember how Brady was just so washed up after Week 4? Yeah, we're not hearing that now. I gotta feeling the same with come for Brees, too.

Wait what?

Our defense sucks?

Somewhat pessimistic but probably accurate discussion.

I have never been a fan of huge contracts (how much does a guy need in life??) and it is evident that Brees' contract has hurt the spread of talent across the team. The interview discusses the cap issues going forward.

Interesting to see how it plays out.

Stopped reading right there. Utter nonsense.

Yeah, cap issues are really not an issue going forward for this team... ok

Irrelevant... you said "how much does a guy need in life???"

He needs whatever the hell he thinks he needs and deserves whatever he feels he can get.

What a man needs in life is none of your business. Free markets take care of the plus/minus.

If I can hire someone for less, I'll hire someone for less.

If I think I need to pay a guy 11 zillion more than someone else, thats my decision not yours.

Cool your jets, Danno.

It's not that bad. I am not an emasculated liberal waging ideological war.

This whole forum is opinion. You, evidently, are allowed yours, and I am allowed mine. One might suggest anything the team does is none of anyone's business on here. Whatever works..

I think the pay checks in NFL are somewhat excessive. So what? You don't. We disagree. Big deal. What we think has nothing to do with anything and will affect nothing. I am pretty sure we can have divergent perspectives on here.

I think, however, it becomes problematic when a fairly significant investment limits purchasing and performance power across the team. If, as they suggests, we wont be able to hold onto Ingram next year, or pay for a decent replacement, then that little cap becomes an issue

I couldn't give a crap about free market politics, spread of wealth or healthcare... It is simply the reality of being able to spread talent across a team.

If we are able to deck the floor, great, if not... problems.

I'd rather they removed the cap, tbh, then we could just get on with it.

Its cool, it just sounded like you have a problem with how much another man makes in a free market.

Re: PFT Live: Can Saints offense overcome shaky defense?

Does Drew have the option to free up money from restructuring his own contract to help the Saints sign free agents? I honestly don't know, and I am not trying to be an @$$ with the question.

As far as paying dudes goes, it's how much the team is willing to pay. Free market capitalism. If Drew wants to spread the wealth (if he even can?) to help lure some free agents and dabble in some NFL socialism, let him. If he don't, let him. The dude has kids...game-changer when it comes to money.

You don't seriously think that Brees, all of a sudden, this year, has lost his ability to read defenses, look off DBs, and protect the football, right?

I'm not saying that DB is having a great year ... but I think your analysis gives him both too much credit and too much discredit.

And, it is this special theory of relative blame that gives me pause this year -- ESPECIALLY when the theory involves only one player.

I start hearing game show error buzzers.

Wait, liberals are emasculated now?! Wow, we have truly become unpopular AND I may end up having to wear a bag on my head this year too! Damn.

But, guess what? Without the check and balance of the salary cap this game would become as much fun to watch as politics.

So.... the team becomes a community, and thereby dependent on each other to work together ( kumbayah ) and the financial incentives for individuals can become de-incentivizing for the whole team. So, rant all you want about free-market capitalism -- just meet us back here to b*tch when individual stud players get paid what the market will bear. ;-)

My point was that the drew Brees of those years did not make dumb throws like he has been doing

Almost Brett favre-esque trying to complete a pass whilst falling down and throwing a wounded duck straight to the defender

I would say drew Brees has lost his ability to protect the football, seen as he is missing open receivers and throwing into double coverage - see the Dallas interception.

Yes, he has, Drew's always thrown interceptions. More so when the team isn't playing well and he's trying to do too much.

Re: PFT Live: Can Saints offense overcome shaky defense?

offense can carry the defense that has looked shaky at times

what games has he been watching? at times? yeah right! more like at times actually played, this is his usual pr stuff he puts out every year.

other than that it was a good piece.

Not at the rate he is doing now

2009 - 34 TD's, 11 ints
2011 - 46 TD's, 12 ints
2014 so far - 9 TD's, 7 ints

He is on pace for another 20 interception year just like 2010 when he couldn't protect the ball that year.

Not his best year but not his worst either.

Int/attempt
2002 - 3.04%
2003 - 4.21%
2004 - 1.75%
2005 - 3.00%
2006 - 1.99%
2007 - 2.76%
2008 - 2.68%
2009 - 2.14%
2010 - 3.34%
2011 - 2.13%
2012 - 2.84%
2013 - 1.85%
2014 - 2.66%

Drew's always thrown a lot of interceptions.

Re: PFT Live: Can Saints offense overcome shaky defense?

Dumb throws include other throws besides interceptions.
Sure there has been some interceptions that turned out to be game changing. However how are Drew's throws for gains, asking players to take a good lick to make the catch, for TDs.
