Saints sign RB Edwin Baker, release TE Tom Crabtree
 

The Saints have added a third tailback for Sunday night’s game vs. Green Bay.

The club promoted running back Edwin Baker from the practice squad on Saturday. To make room for Baker, the Saints released tight end Tom Crabtree. Both moves were announced on the NFL’s transaction wire.

The 23-year-old Baker signed with the Saints’ practice squad in September. He has played in three regular season games, all with the Browns at the end of 2013. In that three-game span, Baker rushed for 171 yards and two touchdowns on 43 carries and caught eight passes for 57 yards. He started Cleveland’s final two contests.

In addition to playing for Cleveland, Baker has had stints with the Chargers, Broncos and Texans. A Michigan State product, Baker was a seventh-round pick of San Diego in 2012.

Baker will back up Mark Ingram and Travaris Cadet for New Orleans, which has ruled out tailbacks Pierre Thomas and Khiry Robinson.

Crabtree’s release leaves the Saints with three tight ends and strongly suggests standout Jimmy Graham (shoulder) will be available to play.

Never good scrambling for patch players at this time. However sometimes
it works out or sometimes it's just a patch.

It's going to work out. He's young and trying to latch on somewhere. He's no PT but often these types of players do contribute more than projected.

Its about emergency depth and special teams. We have 1 healthy RB and 1 scat back.

Injury to either one early in the game would be disastrous.
