Must Win, part 4

Technically Carolina is in 1st place, courtesy of the their Pat Dye Tie
The reality is that we are tied in wins with a game in hand, so one win puts us ahead.

A loss this week will not end our season, of course, but a win would give us virtually 1.5 game lead.

opening line is Car -2,

The Carolina D got lucky because Wilson had a whole bunch of unforced miscues.

I kinda like our chances. But, we are on the road, so no. Don't like anything about our chances.

It`s time to step up, bring the momentum to Carolina, rush Cam and simply execute.

Cam's read option will be a test against our slow LB's; hopefully we can capitalize on any mistakes he might commit

Newton was not a running threat yesterday, but then again, we are not Seattle. I do not think he is 100% from the rib injury, and that's what has hurt his mobility

Pass rush is the key. Make him feel uncomfortable and turnovers will come.

If we play defense like we did last night newton is gonna eat us alive himself. Cover man to man with no blitz at all if you want cam is gonna take off.

It was like Seattle was doing everything in their power to hand Carolina the win. That game shouldn't have been remotely close.

Yesterday wasn't a man scheme. It was a 2-deep zone shell with man underneath. Definitely a bend, don't break defense designed to keep the ball in front of the defenders.

As for the rush, it was a "mush rush" designed to keep Rogers contained in the pocket so as to limit the scramble drill.

For the most part it worked.

Exactly the same should be used for Newton. He's dangerous when he's out of the pocket. Keep him in the pocket and make him throw the ball.

Rush him and he escapes is bad news. Pressure should be in the pocket.

I read where Ryan was subbing a lot on their side of the 50, but when the Packers crossed the 50 he stayed with the primary starters for max effect.

If true, I kinda like that philosophy.

I hope you guys are right all I'm saying is this only 4 guys to beat while everyone is out manning up on receivers an safety's in deep zones. Odds are cams gonna take off not sit and wait untill someone's open and give time for pressure to get to him in pocket. Works with Rogers because he's not a runner but cam can outrun 4 fat guys.

But Cam can't throw like Rodgers either... We'll be able to play our safeties closer to the line

good in theory, but we don't have anyone remotely quick enough to shadow him, and I really wouldn't trust KV in that role

I actually liked our defense in the second half. 2 deep safety with the corners playing man to man inside. It was great. Aaron Rodgers got smoked in the second half. Problem was he threw for almost 300 in the first half. Lol. Wowza.

Maybe we went vanilla last night because we plan on showing a lot of different looks on Thursday. Hopefully we at least have guys at the line pretending to blitz.
Cam isn't great at reading and reacting, but it can be a positive for him bc a lot of time he makes one read and the just takes off

You're right. But halftime adjustments made the difference. You get the feeling Rob Ryan is workin' it!!

Still got a ways to go, but it sure looked a little like last years Defense didn't it?

I mean, a great improvement. No more wondering safety 40 yards off line of scrimmage. Compared to the Cowboys game, last night was night and day. But the turnovers made it feel like it was last years defense.

Pasted this on another thread. Panthers OL is high school level. It really is that bad. Get to Newton early and he gives up. He is a big guy and gets tired of picking himself up off the ground. Hit him early and he will quit by 3rd qtr. He will try and get the ball to Kelvin Benjamin and Olsen (who Seattle took away). Word is they get DeAngelo back this week.

The Panthers have scored 167 to our 199 so far this season and conceded 208 points to our 188. Our offence and defence has been superior.

If we are any good, we will win this game in similar manner to beating the Packers.

The playing away part of the equation is the tough bit.

You haven't been a fan of the Saints long enough to understand, that games with division rivals are for the most part tougher than they should be. Carolina pretty much always plays us tough, and their linebackers give Drew fits.

Going to be interesting to see how their speed deals with Cooks...

Re: Must Win, part 4

We ONLY rushed four against Rodgers, with remaining defenders sitting in a zone/cover assignment scheme...

While the CB were to jam receivers from the LOS, the LBers and Safeties formed a flexible zone net of coverage containment, bend-neaux-break defense...

We'll probably have a similar theme on the short week, with a linebacker or third safety assigned as a spy on Newton...

Benjamin gave Richard Sherman all he could handle, so I imagine Lewis with a Safety will be a simlar theme; expect Vacarro or White maneaux-e-maneaux on the Tight End Olsen in some three safety and nickel type packages...

Big key will be hitting/tackling the very strong Cam Newton and wrapping up, bringing him down in a gang-tackle effort...
